9 June. The world waits for some day in June for 4 years, and then after that, they do 4 more years of waiting for another glorious June day. For the month, attention will invariably be on the goings-on in Germany.
For the rest of us non-football watchers, there'll still be enough to entertain us: squabbles and friction within teams, wondrous bewilderment at the indecipherable blabber of football experts and taciticians, scandalous upsets, controversial allegations, quirky stories, and perhaps wondering why the rest of the world is so caught up about the World Cup.
No, I'm kidding on the last point. Football has such a complex and magical appeal, it's almost impossible to deconstruct and analyse. I can't be bothered to, and quite frankly, so do most of the world. Just get swept along, and have fun in the carnival that is the World Cup.
