What's actor spotting? It's when you're watching a drama and you see someone you recognize, but you're not sure what their actual name is, so you just refer to them as "so-and-so from that one drama." It's my favorite pastime when watching twdramas, because their pool of actors is so much smaller you can spot almost everyone. Surprisingly, I recognized quite a few actors in the currently airing cdrama The Bride with White Hair (新白髮魔女傳), so here they are for your entertainment. Or maybe just mine. :B
Nicky Wu as Zhuo Yihang
aka Xiao Shiyi Lang in Xiao Shiyi Lang (this is the role with which I will forever associate him, because it was my first ever Nicky Wu drama and I love it to pieces)
Louis Fan as Yue Mingke
aka that one guy (Jin Shanzhao) from the Ip Man movies
Li Jie as Geng Shaonan
aka Ouyang Ke from Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008
Liu Sitong as Tie Shanhu
aka Lian Chengjin from Xiao Shiyi Lang
Yue Yueli as Tie Feilong (such a kickass name ;o;)
aka Zhong Shan Long from Fated to Love You (LOLOL)
Lily Tien as the Crafty Safflower Mother
aka (spoilers for Wish to See You Again) Xu Le's mom from WTSYA
As for some quick thoughts on Bride... I'm enjoying it, I guess. It only airs six episodes a week (three days per week, two episodes per day), so I may actually be able to keep up as it airs. Unfortunately, the fighting is not really my cup of tea -- wuxia always calls for suspension of disbelief, but the fighting here is more like they're using the Force than using elevated martial arts abilities. I love Star Wars, but if you're going to be using the Force, at least give me some pretty lightsabers to look at. Then again, this is the first time I'v seen an adaptation of Liang Yusheng's works, so it could be that he describes fighting in a much different way than Jin Yong and Gu Long go about it. Who knows.
Not sure what to make of the costumes. They're just so...bright. Like, despite main girl Lian Nishang's efforts to keep things on the down-low, she's walking around in a BRIGHT PINK OUTFIT, for goodness' sake. Of course people are going to notice you. Also not really a fan of the
purple/light blue outfits that the Wu Dang disciples wear (lulz at Nicky's expression in the picture, though). They all just seem too flashy. It's not too bad when they're fighting, but it's pretty distracting when they're standing around talking. I can't wait until Nicky gets to change into that white outfit.
As for the music, I really like the
opening theme (sung by Nicky Wu), but I'm kinda meh about the
ending theme (a duet between Nicky and Yan Yidan). It's mostly because the ending theme starts off waaay too low, so Nicky sounds really hoarse. But they've played instrumentals of it during the drama, and it sounds great there.
