A Beloved Mercychron set an indefinite time before

The Final Chapter Note: I originally wrote this in July 2004, but didn't post it because K wasn't ready for the end of the story. When she posted "The Final Chapter," I dug it out and made a few changes to keep it in line.
Kal called us Beloved.
Each of us, except for the first ones, came to him in our our time and asked that he save something of us beyond the span of our human lives that we might comfort him when all else was gone.
Perhaps we sensed what was to come.
It began much later than any of us thought, but sooner than we hoped. Thankfully there was more than our voices left to comfort Kal. Lex and Mercy were still by his side. Mercy carried the hope of all of us. Conner was soon to be born.
Some humans had grown distrustful of Kal. He let slip the secret of Conner's impending birth and soon the paranoid military machine saw him not as the man who had helped protect the planet for more than a century, but as an alien who had infected an earth woman.
Lex had always suspected the government of such duplicity and planned ahead. He set the AI in a Watchtower above the Earth ready for another betrayal. But his plans were nothing compared to the wrath of a new mother guarding her family. After she and Lex took Kal back from the government, Mercy began with stripping the fortress of all that had made it a home and a sanctuary, including us. What she left behind would only taunt mankind with what it had lost with its treachery.
Earth is much quieter now. The air is cleaner; the forests deeper. Humans still call the planet home, but the call of the wolf can be heard in its rightful ranges. Seabirds cry out as they dive for abundant fish among the pods of whales. Slowly, but surely, Earth has begun to heal from humanity's mistakes. We can only hope that perhaps, someday, humanity itself will heal enough to admit its wrongdoing.
As the ark carrying Kal, Mercy, Lex and Conner moved out of reach of Earth, we were with them. We carried the memories of two worlds with us. We are Conner's heritage. Indeed, Lex believed that we will share in many adventures and create more memories for them and for ourselves.
We are truly Beloved.
