A Mr. Edwards mercychron set after dolimir_k's A Touch of Mercy

Ordinance disposal is a risky business. It's not a career one takes lightly. Even with every precaution you can think of, things can go wrong. I was just lucky that I hadn't lost more than a couple of fingers disarming booby traps while I was in the military.

Most employers would have been more interested my explosives experience rather than the teaching credentials that had taken a back seat to Middle Eastern conflicts. Moreland has a reputation for hiring veterans for their non-military skill sets even though some of their more notorious employees use obviously military-honed skills every day. I was delighted when I was asked to teach at Raven's Nest and I've never regretted taking the job. It's very gratifying to see children excited by world history.

It's also rewarding to participate in the annual Christmas festivities as Santa for the younger (and sometimes not so young) children. Mercy likes to have Santa visit the school early in December so that the children have a chance to ask for things they might not feel comfortable asking the staff for at any other time of the year. Mercy knows sometimes granting a wish can do as much for these children as the safe harbor Raven's Nest provides them.

I wasn't surprised when Lena Luthor joined the queue to speak to me under the watchful eyes of Echo Team. Lex Luthor's daughter might be heir to one of the largest fortunes in the world, but she is no where near a spoiled brat. She waited patiently, often letting younger children ahead of her in line.

"That's not Santa. " I heard William Phillips, a throwaway who had come to the Nest during the summer, complain to Lena.

"Of course he's Santa. Why would you think he wasn't?" Lena asked with Luthor assuredness.

"Santa isn't missing two fingers on his left hand. That's Mr. Edwards."

Lena just laughed and dismissed the boy's notion and his pout. "Haven't you heard? There was an incident while Santa was preparing for his visit. The reindeer were a bit unhappy that Santa wasn't going to bring them along."

"Yeah?" William still looked at me with suspicion. My elaborate costume and Hollywood spectacular quality hair and makeup obviously didn't override the evidence of his own senses.

"Yeah. Rudolf bites!" Lena revealed with just the right amount of drama.

William squeaked in alarm and buried his hands in his pockets in sympathetic pain as he stepped up, now eager to take his turn. I winked over his head at Lena who just smiled.
