I explained to Jim that while academia and law enforcement were pretty much out of the question, my writing skills were never in question. Greg Stiles of Mayfly Communications has approached me about turning elements of the fraudulent dissertation into a television series. Apparently police procedure shows are the next big thing for the networks. Law and Order had spawned any number of copycats. Stiles wants something with a new gimmick, but similar enough to draw the same audience.
Jim was, as expected, opposed. He'd had enough publicity.
I could only laugh. Stiles didn't want a hair-challenged super-cop from Cascade, Washington in his new series. He did like the idea of someone who was able to solve crimes due to keen observational skills, but he wanted to stay more in line with reality. None of the final characters would be seeing the fine print on a contract from 200 yards away. What a sentinel could supposedly do was too much like science fiction and science fiction didn't last long on network television.
Jim was more receptive to Stiles idea. But he hated the idea of me working in LA.
That was the beauty of the job offer, I explained. Stiles would be filming in Vancouver which is much closer to Cascade.
Jim still doesn't like it. He's grudgingly agreed to me moving out of the apartment, but Canada seems to be out of the question.
I think his exact words were "OVER MY DEAD BODY!"
