Like a flower that grew out of a pot of dirt

At the request of Adele, I'm going to write about something that is near and dear to my heart.

My houseplant.

That's right folks, I have a houseplant in my dorm room. I tend to it daily with love and care. Ah, I remember the day I bought it at target over winter break. It came in a bright red box, scripted letters urging me to "Grow your own calalily!" And as we all know, whenever a box tells me to do something, I do it.

I gleefully took it home and prepared the accompanying soil as necessary, making sure to follow the instructions to a t. I gently planted the seeds and made a mental note to actually take care of this plant. The following days I watered and waited. A couple of weeks passed and I was still watering and waiting. Nothing was growing in the damn pot. I figured maybe it was the cold, sunless weather that was preventing my plant from reaching it's full potential. I moved it out of the sun room (which one would think would be the perfect place for a plant) and placed it in front of a windowsill. A week passed and still nothing. WHERE THE HELL WAS MY CALALILY!?

I checked the instructions again. "6-8 weeks and you will be able to enjoy the beauty of your calalily!". I stared back at my empty pot. I even dug down and checked the seed. It hadn't even sprouted a single leaf. As a matter of fact the seed was in the exact same condition as it was when I had first planted it NEARLY 5 WEEKS AGO.

Why did my calalily hate me? It was the flower I had already even decided would be the theme of my freakin' wedding. I gave so much and it gave me nothing in return-- nothing but dirt.

At this point winter break was over and I had to go back to school, but not without my plant. I made sure to place it on the sunniest point of the windowsill. I also made sure to water it with the adorable pink spray bottle I had purchased earlier for the sole purpose of watering my plant. Again, I proceeded to wait.

A couple of days later, I glanced at my pot-o-dirt and noticed something odd. There was some weird green thing growing out of the dirt. Holy begeesus my calalily was finally growing and it only took 7 weeks to break surface. The next couple of days it continued to grow and grow. It was now actually worth watering and I made sure to do so before class every morning, much to the annoyance of my sleeping roommates. spritz, spritz, spritz. c'mon, spray bottles are fun. anyway, my calalily sprouted beautiful green leaves, tall and majestic. Then, last week, a bud appeared. Could the elusive calalily finally be emerging? A couple of days later, I returned from class to find a pure, newborn calalily waiting for me. With the sunshine reflecting off its smooth petaled surface, it would have been a photographer's dream.

So now I have a beautiful plant to cheer up my dreary dorm room. And although it took the same amount of time as that of any other normal plant to grow and then wither away, I'd say it was worth the wait. As I look behind me and appreciate the beauty of my calalily, I can only think to myself: don't trust anything in a box ever again.
