Summary: It’s creepy at first, how the caller wouldn’t stop calling even if he rejects the call, but it slowly gets on his nerves how the phone won’t stop vibrating and it’s distracting like fuck, because he can’t fucking write his words like he doesn’t have Parkinson’s Disease.
Donghae was a wreck, he knew it, even Yesung knew it-and that’s something because Yesung never knows anything-. Yesung had returned his phone to him after explaining that some guy met me in the toilet and claimed that you dropped it there. He stares at nothing more often than not, he constantly drops his pencil, causing it to roll down the aisle-which earns him a very annoyed teacher and a classmate as his regular pencil picker who becomes equally annoyed after a few times-, and he actually banged into a wall. A wall, rock hard and solid. He would catch Yesung throwing him concerned but amused looks, but he just shrugged them off, blaming it on his workload whenever his friends asked. Whatever it was, the calls never stopped coming, so did the messages. It freaks him out more and more, what with the phone vibrating more and more every passing day, and when it comes to night time, Donghae would stick to Yesung, once making the older push him away in a frustrated manner because he wanted to pee in private, and he would stare frightfully at the offending piece of electronic device (which, by the way, still vibrates). He never did dare to pick up the phone again, because ever since the day Donghae heard the voice whisper beside his ear, he could feel the presence, strong and overwhelming, around him everywhere he goes. He was almost convinced that he would go crazy if this carries on, and it does, for a while more.
Before everything stops.
--
It was like Donghae’s world was knocked off balance again, because he had become so used to the constant vibrations of his phone throughout the night, listening to it vibrate before he falls asleep, that when he wakes up one morning and finds out that there was absolutely no missed calls or text messages on his phone, he drops his phone on the floor. Yesung happens to open the door just as the phone connects with the tiles, a soft thud resounding throughout the room as Yesung stares at the phone, then at his friend, then at the phone again. Donghae’s eyes were wide-how could there be no freaking missed calls at all?-and he stared right back at his friend, slightly shaking, but not enough for Yesung to notice. He heard Yesung sigh before walking towards the bathroom, not missing his how many times did I tell you what porn does to your phone? Kids today.
--
“H-hi.” Donghae’s head shot up from where it was previously resting on, and he could see the fear and hesitation splayed over the other’s face.
“Yes?”
“Umm… I’m kind of new here, so I was just wondering if…” His voice trails off and Donghae followed his eyes to the seat beside him. Oh.
“There’s no other seats available.” He scratches his head tentatively, offering a small smile and Donghae felt himself getting irritated by the other’s shyness.
“Yeah yeah okay take a seat.” He didn’t even bother to hide his disinterest and just resumed face planting on the table, switching off the commotion in the classroom.
When he awoke to the usual wake up call-which was really just Yesung banging his head against the desk and clawing at his hair-, he totally forgot about the new guy, until he saw him standing beside Yesung. He shot Yesung a questioning stare, and he could feel the other wither a bit at his attitude.
“Aww come on Hae, he’s new here. Let’s show him some love.”
--
Yesung’s concept of love is twisted, Donghae decides. He watched as his friend hook their new friend by the arm, although a little awkward, and how the other seems a little frightened by Yesung’s enthusiasm, if his expression was any hint. He settled himself down at their usual table in the cafeteria, watching as students walked past him, chatting with their friends and living their usual life. He looked down at his phone, half expecting it to light up and vibrate, but it didn’t, which was getting weird, not that Donghae preferred the days when the stalker wouldn’t stop calling. He was broken out of his thoughts when Yesung slammed his tray obnoxiously on the table, gleefully ushering the new friend to take a seat.
“Eunhyuk was an ex student at Gangwon, how cool.”
“Who’s Eunhyuk?” Donghae asked as he snatched a chip from Yesung’s tray, even though there was more on the new guy’s tray, and he was sitting right next to him. He stopped midway, arm outstretched across the table, chip held loosely between his fingers when he realised how the other two stilled. “W-what?”
The new guy deflated obviously as Yesung knocked Donghae hard on the head. “What’s this? You don’t even know Eunhyuk’s name here? You were sitting beside him the whole lesson you bong.”
Donghae looked at the guy beside him who was trying to focus on his food, and felt a little apologetic towards him. “Oh, umm… sorry. I was sleeping?”
Eunhyuk looked up so quickly it made Donghae jerk his head back, and offered a small smile. “It’s okay, you looked tired. And you weren’t listening when I introduced myself either.”
“Uh yeah. See, not my fault.” Donghae defended, eyes shooting back to Yesung with a I told you so.
Yesung only mumbled something about ill-mannered brat before he continued probing Eunhyuk to spell out his life story, during which Donghae realised the other was stuttering, a lot.
“Why are you stumbling over your life story? It’s your life no?”
Eunhyuk just panicked further, words broken as he tries to explain himself. Donghae could see the sweat making its way down Eunhyuk’s face, and he couldn’t help but think the new guy is weird. In a bad way.
“Forget it, I was just kidding. Chill dude.”
“Do you know Donghae watches porn?”
Eunhyuk relaxed obviously at this statement, thankful that the attention is brought away from him, while Donghae simply spurt out his water in reply.
“Eeew gross.” Yesung exclaimed as he pulled out globs of tissue. “Both at your fetish and what you just did.”
--
Eunhyuk is hiding something, Donghae could conclude after two weeks of observation. He would stumble over his life stories-which by the way, Yesung is still trying to dig out-and the little snippets he would offer do not coincide.
“Oh Hyuk, how’s your mum doing? You said she was sick last week.” Yesung had brought it up last week over a mouthful of ramen, soup dripping from the sides of his mouth like a fucking waterfall.
“I have a mum?”
Everyone stoned.
“I-I’m joking, oh my god relax. She’s fine, yeah.” He said, fidgeting and digging hard into his bowl of rice.
Donghae was determined, determined to dig deep into this boy’s secrets. He doesn’t know why he’s so intrigued, but he is.
--
It had been over two months since the last message or phone call came, and Donghae is slowly adjusting back to his normal lifestyle, though sometimes he would still steal glances at his phone, like it will explode in his face after two months of pent up calls, or he would still jump when his phone rings in the silence of the night. As like how he’s adjusting to the halt of the phone calls, Donghae is slowly beginning to accept Eunhyuk, though he still hasn’t figured out the boy-not even close to it-but he’s slowly seeing the charm of the other, to which Yesung dissed him for being two months too slow. Eunhyuk was charming, in the sense that he doesn’t try hard to attract attention to himself, doesn’t like being in the limelight, under everyone’s stares and gazes. He doesn’t appreciate people’s oohs and ahs, and gets uncomfortable whenever people start to gather around him. He’s charming in the sense that he speaks his mind-disregarding his life stories-and can be witty at times, majority of which is used to shoot Yesung down, much to the oldest’ dismay and to Donghae’s ultimate amusement. Throughout the two months, Donghae finds himself slowly getting to know the other better, through his silent observations in hope of understanding the other boy, how he scrunches up his face a little whenever classmates bombard him with questions, how he scratches his temple whenever he’s nervous, how he laughs without restraint whenever he hears something funny. His laughter is contagious, and many times Donghae find himself smiling to stuff he doesn’t even hear, instead staring at Eunhyuk’s features, how his eyes crinkle when he smiles, how beautiful he looks when his lips twitch upwards in a smile. He realizes all these too late, as he watches Yesung drag Eunhyuk down the hallway to the café like always, and he’s the one left behind staring at the back view of the two of them. He realizes all these too late, as he watches how Eunhyuk laughs heartily at Yesung’s jokes, how he hits Yesung’s thighs as he topples over with laughter, and how his smile died when he catches Donghae staring, expression taking on a mixture of nervousness and fright. Yesung was right, he was two months too late.
--
“Why can’t you act comfortable around me?” Short and sweet, just the way Donghae speaks.
The other boy looks up from his desk, arm paused midway from jotting down notes on his book, and stares. Donghae blinks, Eunhyuk stares. Donghae blinks again.
“Umm… I am?”
“This totally proves your point, yes you are.”
“I-You are kind of intimidating, in case you haven’t noticed.”
“Wha-me?”
Eunhyuk gulps, and Donghae stares at his Adam apple bob up and down. Stop staring omg, what’s wrong with me?
“Umm… I just thought you didn’t really like me, you know from the start when you started acting annoyed around me the first time you saw me, when I asked you if this seat was empty.” Eunhyuk’s eyes were trained on his shoes, eyebrows furrowed. “And you didn’t know my name.” It was a whisper, something Donghae knew was meant for Eunhyuk to hear only, but he heard it so too bad.
“I was sleeping, I thought I justified myself long ago.”
“You don’t like me, you proved your point on that first day too.”
That, Donghae thought, he couldn’t deny. It was painfully obvious that Donghae DID NOT want the other boy to be joining them in everything they do, but Yesung being the bastard he was, blatantly ignored Donghae’s complains and went on to stick to Eunhyuk like his fucking twin. “I was in a bad mood.” That sounded weak.
“And it lasted for two months?”
“Why’re you insisting that I hate you?”
“I am not, you showed it to me every single day of the past two months.”
Donghae once again, found defending himself to be tough, because it was a fact that he treated Eunhyuk like he was an extra kid around his friends, like he can’t wait for Eunhyuk to fuck off, which he never does by the way. Even after he gradually came to realise Eunhyuk’s charms, he never got around treating the other any better, partly because of his pride, but mostly because he doesn’t know how to. He’s not like Yesung, who can express their feelings blatantly without cringing inside, and everytime he wants to try and be nice to Eunhyuk, he finds that he doesn’t know how to.
“I-You know what, fuck you.”
Donghae could see a hint of disappointment flash across the other’s eyes, before they narrowed and stared straight into Donghae’s own. “I didn’t deserve that, at all.”
And he turns back to writing on his notebook-more like jabbing holes into the paper-, leaving Donghae glaring at nothing in particular, heart just that little bit more empty, that little bit more hollow.
--
Donghae could see Yesung stare at Eunhyuk and him from his side view, the older’s head rotating around like he was watching a goddamn tennis match. He almost wanted to hold the other’s head in his own hands and scream in his face to fucking stop moving, but he doesn’t, not wanting to make the atmosphere any worse.
“Anyone, care to explain?”
Silence.
A sigh. “Fine, be like this you two. I am not bothering about this. Go settle it before I come back from the toilet.”
And then he just left, making the two turn up and watch, before turning their heads back, eyes meeting in the process for an instant, before Eunhyuk blinks angrily and stares down at his phone again.
Fuck my life.
--
Donghae really wanted to apologise, but he really really doesn’t know how to. He wants to make it up for Eunhyuk, for not treating him like how he should for the past two months, for how he scolded him in class just now, for basically everything he did. Hell, he doesn’t even know why he’s so intent on getting Eunhyuk to forgive him, because he never cares.
“Arghhhhhhhh.”
“That is not going to get Eunhyuk to smile, though it is kind of funny, in a retarded way.”
“Can you shut up if you’re not helping me.”
“I am, but you don’t listen every time I talk.”
“I am all ears.”
Yesung blinks, and stares at him for a long moment, eyes wide and mouth open, halted in the process of drinking coffee. Donghae wanted to tell him how much of a moron he resembled, before the other speaks again. “You-you’re going to listen to me? Like seriously, sit down and just hear me talk?”
“What? Was I that much of a friend in the past?”
“Yes.”
Donghae crosses his arms over his chest, head tilted, clearly indicating that he doesn’t wish to continue this conversation further, and that Yesung should start talking for him to fucking listen.
“O-Okay, I mean apologising isn’t that hard. It’s just admitting to your mistakes, and the smile and forgiveness you receive in return is worth it, definitely.”
Donghae fidgets a little on his bed, clearly unfamiliar with this concept of heart to heart talk, but still he nods.
“And I mean, Eunhyuk has really been a good kid, he tolerates your shit every day, your attitude, your mood swings. Just think, did you ever talk to him nicely these past two months, that is if you even bother to speak to him.”
That’s true, Donghae hadn’t made an effort to talk to him. It was always the other tapping him on his arm, asking if he could borrow a pen or his notes. It was always Eunhyuk initiating conversation, simple things like oh I like to eat that too, or your notes are wrong here. And every single time, Donghae replies with an obligatory nod and an occasional grunt, not missing how Eunhyuk deflates with his reaction. Every. Single. Time.
“Hae, it’s not that hard. After what you’ve done to him, apologising is the least you can do. He’s been waiting for it, still is, I believe. He’d never stopped waiting Hae, don’t make him disappointed anymore.”
Somehow Donghae senses that they’re not talking about just these two months any longer, if the other’s tone and expression was any indication, but right now all he can think of is Eunhyuk’s smile and how many times he had trampled on it, and all he can conclude is that, he really messed up this time.
