Chapter 5:
Eunhyuk woke up to silence, the silence so deafening it hurts, kind of. He jolted up straight away, the silence scaring him too much. He looked around him, the white spinning around him like a crazy bitch, and he found himself plunging back down onto the not-so-fluffy mess of pillows on his bed. Wait, what bed? He looked down to see himself dressed in a plain blue hospital gown, and the space on the bedside table was taken up by a bouquet of flowers. Is he in a hospital? He scrambled to get down of the bed, but was stopped by a pair of strong arms placed on his shoulders. That musky scent, that strong presence… He peeped up to see Kyuhyun looking down at him, eyes void of any emotion, but still his heart did a flip when he saw him. He resided back to his bed, and stared as Kyuhyun reached over to pour a glass of water for him.
“Look, I’m really sorry, and I know I shouldn’t have done those things to hurt you. I… I’m sorry?” He offered tentatively when he noticed no difference in Kyuhyun’s actions, and he felt his heart twist in dread.
“I’m gonna ask you something now.”
Eunhyuk nodded, a little too eagerly, he realised, but he would do anything to have a response from Kyuhyun.
“Do you regret it?”
“Regret what?”
“Just, do you regret it?”
But seriously, what can you answer to that? Without even knowing the exact question, what if you replied with the wrong thing? He wasn’t sure if Kyuhyun was talking about the two of them, or him and Donghae.
“Umm… can you explain further?”
Kyuhyun slumped his shoulders and raked a hand through his hair. “Us,” he gestured between the two of them. “You regret?”
Did he? Without meeting Kyuhyun, he wouldn’t have understood how it felt like to be so important to someone. Without him, he wouldn’t have experienced the kind of first love he always pictured himself in. Without Kyuhyun, he probably wouldn’t meet Donghae and have a chance to know him up close.
“No,” Eunhyuk tried rolling the answer around his tongue. “No I don’t.” He settled for this answer, tone determined and everything.
Kyuhyun looked up from beneath his fringe, and he looked so vulnerable and fragile, as if a wrong answer would break him.
“Then what do you feel about Donghae?”
This, he really didn’t know. He had thought of Donghae as his idol-turned-infatuation, and just like the lucky bastard he was, he managed to meet a superstar, who happened to be a friend of his idol, and ended up having sex with. But was the attraction towards Donghae really love, or just a foolish crush? “He’s… He’s my idol?” It was more of a question than a statement, and Kyuhyun knew that the other boy was really just confused right now.
“Alright, just rest.” He heaved out a sigh, and Eunhyuk couldn’t help but realise how tired he looked. “I’ll go handle the stuffs going on outside.” He waved his arms vaguely around the air, and it was then Eunhyuk realised that he was knee deep in fucking crazy shit.
“Wait! Umm… how’s things going on?” He timidly pointed a finger at the window, as if afraid that the fans outside would hear him and rush up to knock him dead.
“Well, there are hell lots of reporters and fans outside now, trying to break your head for snatching me away from them.” And Eunhyuk was relieved to see the smile on Kyuhyun’s face and the humour in his tone. But still, that had sounded plausible, and he gulped, feeling himself shrink right on the spot.
“I’m just joking. My manager had told them that you were just a friend of mine, and that you were really heartbroken because your girlfriend dumped you. And being the kind and handsome character I really am, I offered you a friendly hug to comfort you. Doesn’t sound convincing right? But they’ll have to deal with it.”
Eunhyuk couldn’t stop the disappointment in his heart. He had half-hoped that Kyuhyun had announced to the rest of the bitches that he was his boyfriend, like spell B.O.Y.F.R.I.E.N.D.
“Oh, okay.”
“It really is for your sake, Eunhyuk. You know that right?”
“Yeah of course I do.” Come on, Eunhyuk needs a desperate change of subject. “Umm… oh thanks for bringing me here when I fainted.”
Kyuhyun felt himself stiffen at that, and he only shook his head meekly, jaws clenched tight.
“It wasn’t me.”
“Huh? I mean…”
“Donghae.”
And then he was out of the hospital room, leaving a familiar sense of nausea swirling around in the pits of Eunhyuk’s stomach.

Donghae really didn’t know what he could do. He hadn’t been getting any sleep after getting kicked out of Eunhyuk’s house, so he hung around the neighbourhood, trying to see if Eunhyuk was coping fine. Then he spotted said man coming out of his house, and trailed after him to the park. As much as he didn’t want to admit that he was stalking Eunhyuk, he was, but he reasoned with caring for a friend he truly cared about. Then he found Eunhyuk being bitched by a well, bitch, and suppressed the urge to dash out and rescue him like what the prince charming would do to save a damsel in distress in all fairytales, except this was reality, and Eunhyuk wasn’t any damsel, he himself being a singer who needed to take care of his image. So he could do without the offence of smashing a fan’s face on a park pavement in defence of his helpless friend. He watched as the fan dragged Eunhyuk in front of Kyuhyun’s agency, and saw how the poor guy got bombarded and faint on the pavement as a result. Shocked, he raced out from behind the lamp post-like it was any form of ambush-and dashed forward to pick the poor man up, rushing him to the nearest hospital. This was probably why he was lounging around the lobby of the hospital, not daring to go up and face Eunhyuk. He had been the one who informed Kyuhyun-because as much as he tried to deny it, he was still Eunhyuk’s boyfriend, and Eunhyuk had called onto Kyuhyun right before he fainted-and the latter had rushed here within a matter of minutes.
“Hey I’m going off now.” Kyuhyun had appeared behind him without his notice, causing him to jump a little.
“Wait, you know, if I can explain things?”
“I think you’d better save your explanation to the reporters out there. They had been writing all about how you so scandalously carried Eunhyuk to the hospital.”
“Well, fuck them. I care about what you think, brother.”
“Okay, alright.”
“Listen, I didn’t know Eunhyuk was your boyfriend at the time I umm…” He didn’t know how to phrase it. “Umm… did it with him.” Wow real mature. “And I’m not telling you to blame him either, because we all know how confused he was. So I really didn’t mean to betray you or anything.”
Kyuhyun only nodded his head, his gaze intent on the floor.
“So umm… we are still friends?” Donghae finished off lamely, biting his lower lip in worry.
Kyuhyun chuckled, and hit Donghae gently on the arm. “You know, I wasn’t exactly going to forgive you. But seeing how you’re my only true friend in this industry, I think I can overlook it.”
Donghae let out the breath he didn’t know he was holding in, and sighed in relief.
“But you love Eunhyuk, don’t you?”
Donghae had to remind himself to cough when he choked on his spit, his windpipe closing up on him. “I’m… what?”
Kyuhyun only cocked an eyebrow, so he nodded, a little timidly and apologetic. “Yeah.”
“Guess we can only let the man choose now huh?”
Donghae had to be amazed at how cool Kyuhyun was in handling this matter, but he found himself agreeing and hoping silently that Eunhyuk would wake up to find out the true feelings in his heart. The two singers gazed at each other for a moment, and they didn’t need to talk to know. The battle had begun.
~//~
The next morning, Eunhyuk woke up to a smiling Donghae beside him, and he practically screamed out in shock, because he couldn’t see well in the darkness, and the sun hasn’t rose, so really, all Donghae looked like was a huge black blob of darkness. It wasn’t until he turned on the light, that he saw Donghae still in his same position, smiling down cheerfully at him.
“Donghae?”
“Are you feeling better?”
Eunhyuk was actually stumped beyond words. The last time he and Donghae parted ways, it wasn’t on pleasant terms. “Yeah I think. But hell, I have a weird affinity with hospitals and you.”
Donghae gave a low chuckle, one that I loved so much to hear. “True. Have you read the latest news? The reporters are all bullshitting about the two of us.”
“Because you sent me to the hospital?”
“How did you know?”
“Kyuhyun told me. Why did you leave?”
Donghae sighed. “You were thinking about him even before you faint, I figured he’ll be the first person you wanted to see.”
Eunhyuk coughed. Actually he wasn’t sure if he wanted to see Kyuhyun the first thing he woke up. Although he’s really happy that Kyuhyun had forgiven him, he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d be happier if he had seen Donghae first. “Oh. Anyway, what are you going to say about the reports?”
Donghae stilled in his actions and looked at me seriously. “Eunhyuk.” He sucked in a breath, as if gathering his courage. “Do you like me?”
“What?” Eunhyuk couldn’t help spitting the water on Donghae’s face, and he felt apologetic as he saw Donghae sneeze out water from his nostrils.
“Because I like you, Eunhyuk, and deny as you might, I think you like me too.” Donghae didn’t know where he got this senseless confidence from, but he continued anyway. “I am willing to give up all these for you.” He gestured around the room. “My fame, my fans, my everything. If you really like me back, I can just go downstairs and tell them that you’re my boyfriend, that I’m gay, and let the fans hate on me as much as they want.”
Eunhyuk stared dumbly back at him, still busy digesting the words Donghae just spoke. He couldn’t help but feel so touched by the other’s words, because even Kyuhyun had never said all these promises to him. No one had ever wanted to give up his success because of just him, and him alone. Because they loved him, because they viewed him as the most important and the best damn thing in their life.
“I know you have a boyfriend now, and I like to think that it was because you were confused at that time.” Donghae carried on, in order not to let the silence drag on. “I wouldn’t force you to accept anything, but just know that I love you, and that I’m relieved that at least you don’t have a negative response towards my confession. Right, I’ll go refill your jug of water.”
As Donghae left the room, Eunhyuk blinked twice at the door, before the other’s words rang in his mind. I love you, I love you, I love you.
~//~
It was around midnight when a soft knock on the door broke Eunhyuk’s train of thoughts. He had been sitting around on the bed, replaying Donghae’s confession this afternoon again and again. He still could not take in the fact that Donghae loved him, like how Kyuhyun did. Sure, they had sex, but Eunhyuk chose to believe that it was due to Donghae’s pent up sexual frustrations and raging testosterone, not out of love. Besides, he knew Eunhyuk had his best friend as his boyfriend.
“Baby? You alright?”
Eunhyuk whipped around to see Kyuhyun standing by his bed, expression concerned and worried at the same time. He reached down and brushed a hand across his boyfriend’s forehead, settling on the edge of the bed. He only nodded, staring back at the window. He didn’t know what’s so attractive or nice about him, or what good karma he had accumulated in his past life to deserve the love of these two stars, but the only thing he was certain of was, he didn’t want to be the one hurting either one of them, because he’d rather burn in hell than see one of them in pain because of him again.
“Rest early huh? I probably shouldn’t have come at such a late timing. But I had a schedule to catch up on, and I am only free now. Should I go?”
“No, no. Just stay here.” Eunhyuk couldn’t help feeling warm all the way to his toes, how Kyuhyun would prioritise him in everything he does, how he would regard Eunhyuk’s opinion in every matter he encounters. “You know, actually this afternoon…” Kyuhyun perked up, obviously happy about how the other was willing to talk.
“Hmmm?”
“Umm…” Should he tell Kyuhyun about what Donghae said? He was his boyfriend afterall. But would it make things even more complicated than it is now?
“What is it baby?”
“Donghae…” Eunhyuk’s eyes darted around, worrying his bottom lip. “He, this afternoon, umm, told me…”
“You know, if you’re uncomfortable, you don’t have to tell me?”
“No, I’m just, umm…”
“He told you everything?”
What? He knew? “Define everything?”
“His feelings for,” He slowly poked a finger in Eunhyuk’s direction. “You.”
Eunhyuk nodded slowly, kind of relieved that Kyuhyun wasn’t all agitated or pissed off.
“You know, it’s really up to you right? Like if you ever regret us, you can back out, I understand. But I hope you really can give us a chance before ending it.”
Kyuhyun gently stroked Eunhyuk’s hair, resting his cheek on top of the boy’s head. As the night passes with Kyuhyun slowly patting Eunhyuk to sleep, Eunhyuk found himself even more messed up, even more confused, even more lost.
~//~
You would definitely want to be in Eunhyuk’s shoes for the next few days. Although he was still in hospital-despite the fact that he had totally recovered, the hospital being a sanctuary for him, really-Kyuhyun and Donghae had managed to sneak in to visit him every now and then. Donghae still hadn’t replied to any of the scandals that broke out, and the reporters continued to camp outside the hospital, waiting for any chance of snagging a big gossip or headline news. He didn’t have to deal with the crazy fucked up world outside, didn’t have to face the bitchy fangirls, and got to enjoy the blissful silence in the hospital room. The first few days saw Donghae visiting him in wee hours of the morning-2am or 3am?-and Kyuhyun at around late night-11pm?-and Eunhyuk could see his feelings getting more and more fucked up. Sometimes when Donghae would hold his hand and remind him about his promises of giving up his career, Eunhyuk would feel a stinging pain at the back of his eyes, touched by how much he meant to the singer. At other times when Kyuhyun would lie down beside him and draw lazy patterns on his arm, lulling him to sleep and whispering sweet nothings into his ears, he would feel all reassured and safe in Kyuhyun’s arms, knowing that Kyuhyun would be there for him no matter what others said, which in another sense, also meant that he didn’t mind losing his fans for Eunhyuk’s sake. Eunhyuk had hoped that this would carry on for a little while longer, a little while more for him to calm his raging and jumbled heart, to make a decision he wouldn’t regret. But he should have guessed all good things should come to an end, and he guessed the breaking point came on the next Thursday, when the two of them happened to visit Eunhyuk at the same time.
It was like usual actually, the moon hanging bright and right up in the sky, overlooking the world as it slowly rests and comes to a stop. Donghae had knocked on his door twice, before poking his head in, flashing his charismatic smile, making Eunhyuk’s heart skip a beat, or two. Then he scooted over to the chair beside his bed, and asked his usual questions-how are you feeling today? Are the fangirls bothering you?-and offered to pour him a glass of water when there was another soft knock on the door, and in entered Kyuhyun holding a bouquet of fresh jasmines, looking all perfect and awesome. Then the two of them locked eyes, and although there wasn’t any glares or harsh remarks exchanged(because they were still friends and agreed on a fair battle), there was an obvious tension in the air that hung around them. The two friends exchanged a brief smile, and Kyuhyun actually wondered why the two of them were so tensed up when they had agreed to have a fair fight and stay as friends no matter what the outcome was. Perhaps it was because they hadn’t met each other at all since that day, and were too busy with their schedules and visiting Eunhyuk to contact each other.
“Hey you’re here.” Kyuhyun spoke up first, trying to break the tension.
“Yeah, how’s work recently?” Donghae offered another small smile, and watched as Kyuhyun took up the edge of Eunhyuk’s bed on his other side.
“Fine, just abit tiring.”
Eunhyuk watched this exchange in mild worry and cleared his throat when there was another awkward silence. “Umm…”
“I’ll go and refill the jug.” Donghae offered, probably weirded out that he was intruding in their couple moment.
After Donghae left the room, gently shutting the door behind him after letting his gaze linger over the two of them, Kyuhyun relaxed visibly, and let his hand hook onto Eunhyuk’s waist.
“Baby?”
“Hmmm?”
“Are you still having second thoughts about us?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Because, gosh I don’t wanna sound selfish or something, but if you’ve decided, maybe you should tell Donghae or something? Or if you do regret us, then maybe tell me? So we know when to stop?”
Donghae chose this moment to come back with a fully filled jug of water, hand staying on the handle when he caught the last of their conversation.
“Am I interrupting anything?”
When Kyuhyun shook his head, he stepped in, a little hesitantly, and placed the jug back on the table.
“Okay look, I hope this doesn’t drag on further, and I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t catch on the last few words Kyuhyun said. Eunhyuk, have you thought things through? It’s been more than a week, I know it’s not enough, but we can’t really catch up with this, not really. And if you really decide to stay with Kyuhyun, then the only fair thing I do is clear up this matter so that it won’t bother you two.”
Kyuhyun gradually stood up from his spot on the bed, and walked over to Donghae, slinging an arm around the other’s shoulder.
“Eunhyuk?”
Both of them looked at Eunhyuk expectantly, making the man shift a little uncomfortably in his bed. “Actually I was… umm… okay fine, I think I’ve decided.”
And the whole room stilled, the two men holding their breaths nervously while standing in front of Eunhyuk’s bed. Eunhyuk ran a hand over his face and rubbed his cheeks vigorously, because hell he didn’t want to do this. He had actually thought it over the past week, and came to a conclusion, no matter how reluctant he was.
“Umm… I...”
Later on that night, Eunhyuk was left staring at Kyuhyun standing beside the window in his hospital room, the moonlight highlighting his features and making him look more awesome than ever. And then that was it, the two of them in Eunhyuk’s hospital room, because the decision was made.
