officially might have been won over by Sam for the first time ever
I blame tumblr
I also reserve the right to think Padelecki is the worst ever. It is 99% the performance that I hate and not the character itself.
random thought,
spn is about the ladies

Jared's acting/performance for one. His face for two. ((His history as Dean in Gilmore Girls for three because I WILL NEVER NOT BE ANGRY ABOUT THAT))
Sam... bothers me so much.
I remember in an early scene. The first 3 seasons Sam and Dean have this ONGOING conversation that starts with Sam saying: "dude. YOU HAVE TO TALK about this Dean. Why don't you ever open up, Dean? Why don't you trust me, Dean?" Emotional blackmail works every time, Dean emotionally exposes himself. And Sam doesn't seem to hear a word. Also there was no real reason to DECLARE to Dean that he never exposes himself. Sam is just too wrapped up in his own man!pain to notice Dean is actually a REALLY needy person.
Basically it comes down to this: Sam (and the series) seem convinced that Dean is the "atypical male" and Sam is the "effeminate male" ... therefore Sam is the understood "authority" on emotional exposure and vulnerability. Which I find utter bullshit. Dean is the feminine space in this series. He may joke about sex - but when he pushes Sam to have it, it's usually because he sees that his brother needs to be vulnerable, human, and remember what other people are like, what they are fighting for. Dean views himself as an object - not women. He displays himself, plays the games he thinks he needs to play in order to "win" acceptance, to feel deserving. He's the stereotypical "stripper with daddy issues" only all wrapped up in a package with a penis.
So no. I don't like Sam. Because I DO NOT think that he is my everyman, I do NOT think that I'm supposed to empathize with him - and the series does a damn awful job of trying to ram that down my throat at the beginning. I know they do it that way in order to keep the audience on Sam's side when the demon blood stuff is exposed. But it had the complete opposite effect on me.
It made me resist him. It made me want to hate him. All I see is a tragically selfish person.
Dear shows: do not TELL me to love someone. Do not reverse gender roles in a really interesting way, only to try to pull the rug out from under me.
I was talking to Lynn Zubernis about the fact that I think the writers don't actually know Dean at all. She said (omg I love this woman so hard) that she had the same discussion with Jensen - and he said he's refused to say things before because of that very problem.
There's a disconnect between these characters and the writing room. Because of Dean's good character choices (ELABORATE character choices), I can see between the bad writing into the character. Padalecki doesn't give me that option. He rubs me the wrong way. And he plays the role straight - I don't have the same faith in his characterization.
There are SO MANY REASONS.
Mostly the gender thing. Sam is a straight man all the way. There's no gender reversal there. He's the biggest NICE GUY on television ever (since Xander) and it SQUICKS me so hard.
/ugh Nice Guys
In the reverse: I often read Dean as female. I think it is a tragic coincidence that he has a penis and I generally read him as inhabiting a feminine space.
Sorry omg word vomit!
