I didn't place this time - but a truly brilliant Sleepy Hollow icon won first place and my hope is restored!!! Congratulations to xclaire_delunex, spikesredqueen, and red_satin_doll for their great artwork and creative use of the lyrics! It was a really great challenge and I was really torn while voting for this round.
However, I still have a handful of icons made for this challenge and so I'm going to share everything rather than let them sit in my computer wasting away.
To begin: these are the three that I submitted to the challenge. I'm really quite please with the coloring in the Willow one especially. And as usual - I tried to submit three different fandoms.
This time around I made quite a bit more icons for the Buffy-verse than I have in the past. I guess I was just really taken by the potential of the lyrics. Also I wanted to play around with some of the ladies that aren't generally given as much love.
I was remiss this time around in that I was just dealing with google-image searches instead of doing the caps myself, which I try to do at least some of the time. This time I didn't really have any ideas going in - just started by looking at caps and then went from there. I've seen the first one used for Buffy-icons a lot, but I felt it was a good one for the lyrics "sky is falling" and am pleased with the way the colored texture came out. I'm really pleased with that one.
I wish the second one had turned out better - "I watch the Heavens but I find no calling" is such an interesting pairing for me with that moment of baby!Buffy chained in the basement of a fraternity house. I imagine she was so tired in that episode and really just wanted a night out. (Just look at her little annoyed, sassy face!) Buffy's face is just too dim and the words don't pop enough.
I love this moment in Restless with Willow in her "softer side of Sears" look as Oz and Tara laugh at her. The first quote appeals to me so much: "you're not alone in these stories pages" because she feels so isolated here and ALSO she is giving a BOOK REPORT ON NARNIA. Ugh. The second: "try to hold it in" I think is nice because while most people presume that Willow evolved into a dangerous person - I think a lot of what Restless told us was that there was something inside of Willow that she feared would someday be exposed, no matter what costume she wore. There's darkness and blood and obsessive possessiveness in Willow - I think going back to her very beginnings she is more than she appears. So I thought the quote was appropriate. Also the coloring is wonderful. Kudos, me!
Cassie, Anya, and Annie. Three of my most beloved. Two of the most important women to the 'verse with the least screentime.
Cassie: "don't wanna be alone" I think is so fitting to her. Especially in this moment, in Buffy's office telling her not to play the hero and let her die. So beautiful and poignant. And so important. I just really, really love Cassie and I love this icon terribly.
Anya: "there's still talk of saving souls" - it's hard to tell but this is the moment when she is in the bar with Spike moments before they sleep together. One thing that fandom likes to forget is that even as a vengeance demon, Anya still had a soul. I find that so desperately important in talking about Anya. And I love that the pairing of this quote with her sadness and disillusionment and raw need really exposes how hard it must have been to be around the Scoobies and their demon-prejudice for as long as she was. Told that demons are soulless and don't matter. When she knows that she HAD a soul and she did matter - and she was doing what she thought was right. She was the defender of women's hearts. To her there was no greater crusade. And here she is, a victim of a broken heart just like all the others, desperate for a connection and to be told that it was still worth it. UGH.
Annie: "I am able" IS THERE ANYONE IN THE VERSE THAT THIS APPLIES TO MORE?! I refuse comment. If you don't understand this icon, you need to check your priorities. Annie is flawless. THE END.
Supernatural Oh look, it's my ship! (ahem) Anne looking defiant and lovely with the quote about souls as if she can save them. And Jo - in her final moment - "try to bring more" ... I don't have any commentary on these. I felt as though the quotes fit with the ladies' overall personalities. I submitted the Jo icon because I really liked the coloring in the words and her little sassy face. I also like the arrangement of the words - the way they get bigger and aren't in a unified line. I just really like it.
Lost Girl Oh look. I'm overwhelmed with feelings about Bo and Kenzi and Tam-tam. Huh.

Teen Wolf ....[Allison Argent is flawless as fuck and better than any of your favorites, haters get the fuck out. Click at your own risk. #spoilers]I don't have words other than hateful keysmashing today. This is Allison Argent. All of the icons should be about her being fearless and flawless. All other characters are irrelevant. Fuck a Jeff Davis. The end.
NO REALLY THE IRONY OF THESE ICONS IS NOT OKAY AND I DON'T WANT TO DISCUSS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AND GO AWAY EVERYONE GO AWAY.
Once Upon A Time LOOK AT BABY!REGINA'S FACE. I love the scenes of newly-wed Regina, because she is still so innocent and afraid and it is beautiful. And this is her before she really lets her fear and her anger loose. She's right on the cusp of turning into the Evil Queen and the transformation from sad girl, to Queen, to Mayor, to something so much more than any of that is the most beautiful character development. She's just monstrously lovely.
Vampire Diaries Mostly I just really love this shot of Elena and thought this quote suited her. However, it's not a very good icon at all. The words don't add anything to the image and that upsets me. I could have sat down for a while and fixed it but... at this point the VM film had just finished downloading and PRIORITIES.
That's it for this round! It was heaps of fun and I'm loving challenging myself as an icon-maker. Because I do that now. So weird.
