Sequel to Our Connection.
The Side You Cannot See.
It has been a month since Heerin left. She moved out of Doojoon’s place and moved into a rented apartment.
They have been bumping into each other though, every single day. But Heerin would choose to ignore Doojoon, although it ached her heart to do so. Doojoon as well, would walk away from Heerin, even though he knew he wanted to explain to Heerin the truth so much. Through that one month, it had always been this way, it never changed. Soon, they did their best to totally avoid one another.
That group, Doojoon’s group of friends saw how hard Doojoon was trying to stop being popular. He wore back those geeky glasses of his, stopped styling up his hair which he wouldn’t fail to do so every single day in the past. He wore his uniform neatly. He became, like any other ordinary school kid. Slowly, his popularity disappeared, though many girls found it a pity he became so ordinary. He even smiled less, so much lesser, ever since one month ago.
“Yah Yoon Doojoon!”
“What?”
“Come with us. We need a word with you.”
They brought him to a quiet place, a place where people would rarely gather or even walk pass.
“What happened to you?”
“What do you mean what happened to me?”
“What happened to all these?” His friend took out a suave picture of him he had taken two months back, when he was in the midst of the popular boy era.
“I just don’t want to be all these anymore. That’s it.”
“Doojoon-ah, it was fine that you lost your popular boy thing, but it isn’t okay with us that you don’t smile anymore. Not to mention your confidence, it’s not even there anymore.”
Then it dawned on them.
“It’s that Kwon Heerin, isn’t it?”
Doojoon was hanging his head when his friends were speaking, but he lifted his head when they mentioned her name.
“Don’t talk about her.”
“So it really is her? Yoon Doojoon, you fell for Kwon Heerin, for real?”
“SHUT UP!” Doojoon glared at his friends, “You don’t need to know.” He gulped, keeping in his bad boy attitude and walked away.
“Honestly, I would rather he had beaten us up, than just walk away like this. It’s so not like the Doojoon we know anymore.”
“Doojoon… Is putting himself down, to fit into Heerin’s status in school…” Another person murmured.
“We need to do something, right?”
“Kwon Heerin! Stop running away!”
Heerin paused in her footsteps when her best friend caught her, but she struggled to free herself.
“Let… me…. Go…!”
“No! I’ve let you go long enough, I’m not letting this continue.” Heerin’s situation may not be as bad as Doojoon. She had always been one of the invisible students in school, the ones that blend into the lockers or the walls in the school. Life was easier on her, as from the beginning, it had never been that much better. Forgetting the popular boy may be a problem, but she soon faced the fiction she thought was the fact, that someone like him, would never fall for her, hence, she forgot him, easily. Yet, seeing him in school almost every day wasn’t really helping.
At that point in time when her best friend was confronting her, he walked past. Doojoon, hung his head and walked past. The aura in him disappeared, everything about him last time, disappeared.
“You are going to let him tear himself down like this? When have you become so cruel, Kwon Heerin?!”
Heerin stared at the back view of Doojoon leaving her sight. The sight was uncomfortable, but that moment allowed Heerin to read Doojoon better. Just that few seconds, it allowed her to understand the real him.
That boy lost his barrier, his protection, his charm and aura, that prevented people from knowing him better.
My love for you has never ended. Yet I wished it did. Then I won’t hurt you again, then I won’t have to let myself love you in such pain. If only I could be stronger, then I could protect you. If only I was a better person in the past, then you wouldn’t have left me. I lost my chance, the chance I had when you were already by my side.
Your face had faded, away from my dreams. You became the last thing I want to think about, because you send my hopes crashing down. I hate you for that, because you were the one who built my hopes up. Your existence is not important. I will keep pretending that things are perfect without you around.
