Music and writing

What? This entry isn't about my life, ideas, or a meme?

Actually, no, it isn't. In fact, it's something I felt like discussing completely out of the blue, whilst listening to music. Of course, you don't have to be a writer to discuss this topic.

...

So. I listen to music while writing. That in itself isn't too surprising. Recently, however, I've been building up the plot for one of my series (called The Drone Caller)... and I've actually created a playlist of songs to listen to while writing it or thinking up ideas about it.

This has never happened to me before. o_O

So my questions are:
Do you listen to music while writing?
Have you ever found yourself building a "soundtrack" to a story? (Not to sell, of course, but to listen to. XP)

Examples are welcome. Very, VERY welcome, in fact.

It depends. Sometimes I find music to be a distraction, and work in (relative) silence. Of course, given that my computer is in a room where there are five... and more often than not, four of them are running at the same time... Combine that with a chiming clock next to me that goes off every fifteen minutes, and it's not completely silent.
I guess that's one of the reasons I do listen to music while writing - to block out noise. Another reason would be for the obvious reason of "it's inspirational". ;P

As I mentioned earlier in this entry, I've found myself building up a "soundtrack" to The Drone Caller - even going so far as to create a playlist for it, which is unusual for me. (I'm not a playlist person.) Then again, it's a way for me to keep all the relevant tracks in one place.
The interesting thing about the "soundtrack" is the choice of genres. The songs tend to lean towards digital sounds, synths; even hip-hop. Of course, with genre-mixing, there's also rock and reggae, and I'm thinking I might also see if I could snag some gentler pieces.
