So i saw a lot of sawing, hammering, and drilling today. Lotsa blood, lotsa meat-looking stuff flyin through the air. I don't think that I have the muscles to be an orthropedic surgeon. You have to hammer and chisel bone with a lot of force!! Dr. Gick was cool, he showed me the different components, and explained things as he went. The knee replacement was the most interesting, because you could see eerything that he did. He had to saw off the end of the femur and the top of the tibia, and then he hammered/screwed in a titanium/plastic artificial joint. It wasn't very bloody. The two hip surgeries, however...very bloody and 'meaty'. Live bone is wet and is red/pink..so it looks like meat.
I was pretty close to the action. There are certain distances you must keep if you're not scrubbed in. I had my scrubs, cap, and little mouth guard though. Most of the people thought I was a medical student, so when they explained things....pretty much everything was over my head. Extremely interesting, though. Aside from seeing him saw the bones down, like an artist, the sewing up part was really cool to watch. My mom was right in the middle of all of the action, she did a little hammering, a lot of sewing, and inserted the ball of the ball and socket joints. She mainly suctioned blood out of the hole. She's the shit.
Anyways, I was in the OR from 7am to 7 pm. 1 knee replacement, 1 khyphoplasty (back surgery), and 2 hip replacements. My feet hurt and I'm totally pooped..and all I did was just watch!!!!
Tomorrow, I'm goin to see my little hospice lady and bring her flowers. Good night everyone.... if you're totally grossed out, it's your own damn fault!
