Girl on a horse, girl on a horse, girl on a galloping horse and whoa. Girl on a horse next to another girl on a horse in the midst of girls and boys on horses. Girls and boys on horses whoa. Girls and boys on horses walk. Girls and boys on horses watch hounds run by and keep walking, watch a fox and keep walking, watch boy on a horse gallop by and keep walking. Girls and boys on horses spread out, walking.

Girl on a horse lets her reins loop. Girl on a horse stretches into her heels. Horse with a girl stretches his neck and whickers to another horse with another girl. Girls and horses do not talk. Girls and horses are heading into woods now. Girls and horses notice a stream, gravel-bottomed, a hillside, a grove. Girls and horses walk.

Horses with girls see grass, trees. Horses with girls see water ahead. Horses with girls are glad for a walk after a gallop, and before another gallop, and before jumps and gallops because jumps and gallops and walks in grass with trees is what horses do.

Horse with a girl walks by the hillside, looks down, hill slopes down into the grove. Horse with a girl approaches the stream, stream slopes down and up. Horse with a girl leans up and back and over and falls. Horse with a girl pinned underneath him thrashes. Horse kicks up, rolls off girl.

Girl stands up. Girl’s vision is too blurry and speckled to see. Girl stumbles. Girls and boys on horses call, “Come out.” Girl follows. Girl is numb. When she stumbles out of the grove a girl with horse in hand holds her and talks.

Horse in the grove lies still. Boys separated from their horses lean over horse, pulling him. Boy without a horse places fingers under jaw of horse. Boys without horses know things. Boys without horses do not talk.

Girl without a horse is numb, dumb. Girl without horse is held but not so tightly she couldn’t break free and run. Girl without horse repeats dumbly, in shock, “I must see to my horse, I must see to my horse.” Girl without horse is talked at, “Look at me, look at me.”

Girl, finally, is without a horse.
