Cut for those people who don't like SSHG. And also because I felt like it.
I just spent the evening looking at a bunch of SSHG music videos on Youtube. You know, although some of them were very good- they do not work well with first/second-year Hermione. She is just too young. Snape would have enough of a problem being in a relationship with her in sixth/seventh-year. In first/second- even third/fourth- she doesn't have that kind of maturity and he doesn't have the inclination to be in that much of a Lolita-esque relationship. It just doesn't really work.
On the other hand some of the MVers have done some really good things with the film clips. I was impressed.
Some highlights: Two Snape-centrics, one to "You're So Vain" complete with Snape tossing his hair, and the other a very rough one to "I'm Too Sexy." Which was very, very photoshopped but hysterical nonetheless. There was actually another one to "I'm Too Sexy"- MUCH better than the first, which makes it less laugh-out-loud funny, but better overall. This one included some fabulous clips of other characters' appearances (a particularly good Ginny expression) and makes excellent use of the duelling scene from the second movie. I will never again be able to think of that raised platform as anything but a catwalk. Another funny one was the Boggart!Snape scene set to... you guessed it... "Dude Looks Like A Lady."
Some excellent use of editing to darken and slow some images and cast shadows. Unfortunately some pathetic lack of editing which made some images incredibly pixellated. And some REALLY well-done smash-cuts in one video, although the subtitles and DivX caption takes away from the overall picture. Unfortunate reuse of imaging- the "Snape stalking away with cloak swirling" is one, "Hermione walking down steps in dress" is another, and "Hermione in snow" a third. This gets especially annoying when it's done several times per film.
On the other hand, I love that a few artists were able to use some images that weren't even Hermione or Snape but in context seemed to be.
I wish I could access YouTube at home.
