Продолжение статьи UAE Investment Fund Buys Georgian TV Channel - Station Dow Jones February 25, 2009: 11:02 AM ET TBILISI, Georgia (AFP)--A United Arab Emirates investment fund has purchased a Georgian television channel at the center of opposition claims the government is clamping down on free speech, the station's owner said Wednesday. Owner Joseph Kay said that RAK Georgia Holding, the local unit of the Ras al- Khaimah Investment Authority, or RAKIA, had purchased a controlling stake in Imedi television. "After long negotiations, I am happy to announce that RAK Georgia will finance all projects in Imedi," Kay said in remarks shown on Rustavi-2 television. Rustavi-2 reported that RAKIA, the investment arm of the Ras al-Khaimah Gulf emirate, had purchased 90% of the channel and that Kay had retained 10%. The sale came after a Georgian court last week confirmed Kay as the owner of Imedi following a dispute with the family of its founder, billionaire opposition figure Badri Patarkatsishvili, who died in February 2008. The station had also been briefly operated by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. ( NWS). Authorities raided and shut down Imedi during antigovernment protests in November 2007, accusing the channel of stoking tensions and Patarkatsishvili of seeking to overthrow the government. Imedi later returned to the air but Georgia's opposition, which accuses President Mikhail Saakashvili of controlling the media, said it no longer featured reports critical of the government. RAKIA is a big investor in ex-Soviet Georgia. The fund last year purchased a 51% stake in the strategic Black Sea port of Poti and announced plans to invest $200 million in revamping the port and building a tax-free zone.
