Word count days 252 and 253

Sep 10, 2010 23:49

As predicted, writing time for the past two days was devoted to mapping out the major scenes and playing a bit with the try/fail sequence. I think I've got one too many cycles and am considering which almost-but-not-quite effort to cut out.

I had planned on spending tomorrow and Sunday writing, but my world is a bit too off-the-shelf and I'm thinking of fleshing it out a bit more. When creating a world you do not want to wing the details or you run the risk of contradicting yourself. Also when thinking on the run, your mind is likely to go for the easiest thing that comes to mind and before you know it you've stuck in a cliche that throws your reader right out of the story. By the same token, knowing your world allows you to slip in telling bits of detail that help the reader's imagination make your world her world.

I think my setting needs a bit more verisimilitude, so I'm adding at least two but no more than three hours of world building before Saturday's schedule; in the morning, before I get into the writing proper.

For those of you playing along at home:
My weekday writing schedule is 7-8 AM and 10-12 PM.
Saturday and Sunday are 2-6 writing, but I'll be doing research & world building from 10-12 (or maybe 1) tomorrow. (I do not spend writing time on research or editing.)

I'm not setting myself a word count goal yet. Let me get back into the rhythm of writing before stepping up the pace.

writing, word count, writing craft
