Let's cut to the chase. Was it as great as we know Steven Moffat can be? No. Was it as good as the first episode. No. Did it suck at the levels of, say, "Fear Her," or the episode with the Slitheen? No, thank goodness.
Okay, so it wasn't a home run, but it was a solid stand-up double. And there were two interesting developments in service to the greater series arcs.
1- I'm of the opinion that the Dalek field should lie fallow for a season. But the show is under enormous pressure to keep them on because of their popularity. So Moffat does a reboot. This is good. What can these new Daleks do? What sort of threat do they present? I'm actually curious to find out.
2- This is a Doctor that loses his temper. He actually allowed his fear and rage to get the better of him to the point where he attempted to *kick* a Dalek into submission without first discovering their plan and motives. This is quite a change from RTD's Doctor(s) who seemed to divine the solution out of thin air. The same thing happened last week when he almost lobotomized the space whale without completely understanding the situation. A young-seeming, emotional, impulsive Doctor? This is a much more interesting character than where Ten ended up.
Plus, I love WWII flashbacks.
Looking forward to next week, when Moffat expands on his own mythology.
