CHARACTER
NAME: Kazuma Kuwabara
FANDOM: Yu Yu Hakusho

BACKGROUND HISTORY:

Kazuma Kuwabara is the strongest student at Sarayashiki Junior High…that is, second only to Yusuke Urameshi. In the beginning of the series, he is constantly picking fights with Yusuke only to lose every single time. Aside from wanting to beat Yusuke, Kuwabara also wants him to recognize him. When Yusuke finally says his name, Kuwabara never felt happier. Happy times crumbled when Yusuke was killed in a fatal car accident and Kuwabara was crushed. At Yusuke’s wake, Kuwabara shows his respect for Yusuke by… angrily stomping into his house and yelling at his funeral photo while Yusuke’s ghost witnesses it.

After the funeral, Yusuke needs to tell his loved ones to not cremate his body, since he needs that to return to life. In order to do so, he needs to possess someone who has a strong sixth sense, know the person he is possessing and vice versa. Kuwabara meets this requirement and, through many complications (i.e. confronting Keiko’s parents in Kuwabara’s body), Yusuke finally convinces Keiko not to cremate him.

At school, Kuwabara is forced to subject to a corrupt teacher’s nonviolence policy in order for his friend Okubo to keep his part time job to support his family. In addition to that, Kuwabara and his friends must pass the next test with 50 points or higher. While his other friends have no problems with this, Kuwabara agonizes over it since he got a 7 in the last test. That doesn’t stop him from studying hard though. He keeps his promise to Okubo and takes whatever beating he gets from other students and refuses to fight back. Kuwabara studied so hard that he fell asleep one night, enabling Yusuke to enter his dream and help him study. It pays off when Kuwabara is certain that he had passed the test, much to his friend’s relief. Of course, the teacher isn’t too happy about the delinquent passing, so he alters one of Kuwabara’s answers and returns the test to him with a 47. Kuwabara notices the change and nearly beats him up before Yusuke’s voice calling out to him causes him to stop. Thankfully, the teacher the forced to change his grade back and Okubo is allowed to keep his job.

Yusuke now has to enter the dreams of three people who want him back the most, and tell them that one of them has to kiss him. Among the three are Keiko, Yusuke’s mother Atsuko, and our ever honorable and forever traumatized Kuwabara who suffered nightmare he will never forget. Fortunately for Kuwabara, the one that kisses Yusuke was Keiko, and he returns to life. Not too long after his resurrection, Yusuke finds Kuwabara in another unfair situation. Kuwabara is forced to steal comic books and return them to the bully who is holding his dear Eikichi hostage (well, he bought them and left the receipt. What a nice guy). Yusuke wonders what kind of person Eikichi is, as she must be someone Kuwabara cares about a lot. But it turns out Eikichi is actually is adorable kitten! After Yusuke’s surprising entrance, an all out brawl breaks out between Kuwabara’s friends and the other students who kidnapped Eikichi. Kuwabara finally gets her back and Yusuke is officially made Spirit Detective after finding the demon that possessed the leader.

Soon after that, Kuwabara decides to go see Master Genkai about his sixth sense. When he gets to her temple, he realizes that there is a martial arts tournament being held to gain Genkai’s Spirit Wave ability. He meets Yusuke there also, who is there to prevent a demon named Rando (who is in disguise) from obtaining the technique. Kuwabara demonstrates his awareness at Rock, Paper, Scissors and fights through the tournament, using his Spirit Sword for the first time. He loses to Rando but Yusuke defeats him thanks to the energy given by the unconscious Kuwabara.

The next case is literally out of the world for Kuwabara, with four Saint Beasts who wish to eliminate all humans by infecting them with the Makai insects. This is where he first meets Kurama and Hiei, with him not getting a very good impression of the latter. As they move on, Kuwabara fights and struggles a lot against the second Saint Beast Byakko, a large anthropomorphic tiger. The battle was a long and annoying struggle, with Byakko coming back every time (even after being knocked into lava) until Seiryu the Blue Dragon disposes him himself. In the end, Yusuke fights Suzaku and ultimately defeats him using his light energy. Kuwabara, not wanting to leave his friend behind, gives Yusuke some of his energy and saves his friend’s life.

The following case has the trio (that is, Yusuke, Botan, and Kuwabara) embark on a mission to rescue the Ice Demon Yukina from the greedy mob boss, Tarukane. Tarukane intends to keep Yukina as a prisoner and make a profit out of her by selling gems that are produced with her tears. As soon as Kuwabara lays his eyes on her, he instantly fell in love and is determined to rescue her. After overcoming the Demon Triad, Yusuke and Kuwabara fight and defeat the Toguro Brothers…or so they think.
After seeing Yukina off to the Ice World, Kuwabara and Yusuke are surprised to see that the Toguro Brothers are actually alive and well. Younger Toguro invites them to the Dark Tournament that will take place two months later, for a chance at a final show down. During the two months, Kuwabara trains with Hiei and Kurama and improves his skills.

Although Kuwabara fought a lot matches during the Dark Tournament, he lost to most of them. His first fight with childlike Rinku was close call, but he loses due to ring out. The battle with Dr. Ichigaki’s team was a tough one, since their opponents were not demons, but brainwashed humans. The situation seems hopeless as the only way to stop them is to kill them, as reason is almost impossible. Kuwabara tries for the latter anyway when he sees vision of their reasons for undergoing the doctor’s experiment. Kuwabara tries to reach them with words, but he easily fell to the three after taking many hits. Thankfully, the Masked Fighter uses her Spirit Wave technique to remove the brainwashing devices from the students and brought them back to life after the rest of the Urameshi Team kill Dr. Ichigaki.

The team gets no rest time as the next round immediately begins with them fighting Team Masho, a team consisting of ninjas. But with Hiei and the Masked Fighter are ruled unfit to fight and Kuwabara badly injured, only Yusuke and Kurama were left to fight them. Kurama first defeats Gama, whose spell makes things complicated for him in the next fight with Touya by having him temporary immobilized. Kurama defeats Touya but falls to a state of unconsciousness, leaving him helpless against Bakken’s beatings. In turn, Yusuke effortlessly beats the stuffing out of him. It took more effort in defeating Jin the Windmaster, but during the fight, Kuwabara notes that Yusuke and Jin were very similar, almost like brothers.

Yusuke eventually defeats Jin with the Spirit Wave, but is disqualified when Koto the referee lagged behind on her ten counts. It seemed hopeless for the team until Kuwabara steps in to face the leader of Team Masho, Risho. With broken bones and probably other things, Kuwabara barely keeps up with Risho and is almost overwhelmed until his beloved Yukina arrives. All of a sudden, a burst of energy arises from Kuwabara (the Power of Love, baby) and he comically knocks Risho out of the ring, saving the Urameshi Team and moving them to the next round.

Kuwabara fights on against members of Team Uraotogi, but it just wasn’t his day when Shishiwakamaru used the Cape of No Return against him. Of course, the Kuwabara did eventually return to witness the victories his friends made over Team Uraotogi.

Kuwabara remained unaware of Genkai’s death until he fights the Elder Toguro Brother who pretty much told him the whole story. Enraged, Kuwabara uses the Trial Sword that Suzuki gave him before the battle and forms the Spirit Flyswatter to smash the Elder Toguro Brother into oblivion. Yusuke battles with the Younger Toguro tough things got tougher when the latter increases his strength to 100%. Unable to get Yusuke to fight at full power, Toguro seemingly kills Kuwabara on the advice of a Genkai-possessed Puu. It worked, as Yusuke’s power rises over his friend’s death and defeats Toguro in the end. Kuwabara happily reveals himself to be alive right after he lets Yusuke cry manly tears over him.

A new threat appears after the group returns home after the tournament. According to Koenma, someone wants to open the tunnel to Demon World. Kuwabara assists them on whatever he can, but that doesn’t mean he won’t stop to enjoy an awesome Megallica concert. After the concert, Kuwabara and his friends run into Kyoshi Mitarai aka Sea Man, who traps them inside his aquatic territory. He eventually frees his friends and defeats Sea Man when he develops the Dimensional Sword that enables him to cut through dimensions. Kuwabara carries all three of his friends and Sea Man back to his apartment, befriending the now former follower of Sensui.

Yusuke engages a street brawl with Sensui. During the battle, Sensui manages to kidnap Kuwabara and escape to his cave. Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, Genkai, Yana, Kaito and Sea Man as a guide, go through various trials throughout the cave to finally free Kuwabara. The already angry Kurama attacks Gourmet, who originally was going to eat Kuwabara to obtain his Dimension Sword, who is revealed to have been taken over by the still alive Elder Toguro (much to Kuwabara’s surprise). Kurama traps Elder Toguro within the Sinning Tree, which forces him to suffer for all eternity.
When they finally reach Sensui, the whole group but Yusuke are trapped within Itsuki’s dimension. Yusuke fights Sensui alone. In a long struggle, Sensui releases his Sacred Energy which proves to be too much for Yusuke and Kuwabara realizes that he could die if they don’t escape to help him in time. In that last second of desperation, Kuwabara calls forth the Dimension Sword and destroys Itsuki’s dimension. Unfortunately, they were too late as Yusuke is struck down by Sensui.

Enraged at the death of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei increase their power and pursue Sensui through the tunnel and into Demon World. Even with the three combined; they find themselves unable to defeat Sensui. Yusuke returns thanks to his half-demon blood and goes through the tunnel to confront Sensui one last time. Yusuke eventually defeats Sensui, but much to his disappointment, because of the interference of someone else, his demon father.

After the defeat of Sensui, Kuwabara was the only one of the four main guys who remained behind as the rest travel back to Demon World to settle whatever score they have with each other. Unsure and angry about the whole thing, Kuwabara eventually gives in and engrosses himself in his studies, and works hard to get into Gaikou Fuzoku High School. During the two year period, Kurama would travel back to Human World to fill things in for Kuwabara. After the whole tournament is over, Kuwabara and Kurama meet up with Keiko, Botan, Yukina, and Shizuru at Genkai’s temple. After speaking with her, the gang decides to go to the beach.

PERSONALITY:

At first glance, Kuwabara may come off as a big and stupid delinquent, but on the contrary, he is actually more than that. Underneath that loud, teeth-gritting demeanor is a young man with a heart of gold, a code of honor, and a soft spot for kittens. Kuwabara cares deeply about his friends, defending them whether the conflict is verbal or physical (especially the latter). As a man of honor, Kuwabara isn’t afraid to die for the sake of his friends or for the better cause. This is very evident throughout the series.
In the beginning, Kuwabara and Yusuke Urameshi were simply rivals, with Kuwabara constantly challenging Yusuke to fights that he (Kuwabara that is) would always lose. When Yusuke died in the first episode, Kuwabara angrily attended the wake, screaming at Yusuke’s picture while his spirit watched on. As the series progresses, the two became best friends (though they still argue a lot and prone to hit each other) while maintaining that friendly rivalry.

As for the other two, Kuwabara gets along well with Kurama. He trusts Kurama and would ask him about anything that confuses him. On the other hand, he has a mutual dislike with Hiei. Hiei had insulted him the first time they met and the two have been openly insulting each other ever since. Kuwabara sees Hiei as an uncaring jerk while Hiei sees Kuwabara as useless and stupid. Although Kuwabara knows Hiei is a good person, that won’t stop the two from calling each other names.

Ironically, Kuwabara is in love with Hiei’s sister, Yukina. Not knowing about their relation, Kuwabara openly professes his love for her though she still seems oblivious about it. When she’s around, Kuwabara’s strength rises greatly via the “power of love”.

All and all, Kuwabara is a good person and is possibly the kindest of the four main guys. He may not be as strong as Yusuke, as short quick as Hiei or as smart as Kurama, but Kuwabara possesses an unbreakable will and will back up any friend in need even at the cost of his own life.

As for how he manages to get around in Rivelata, Kuwabara would obviously be a bit confused on how he gets there at first. He may complain at how there are no videogames or anything that requires an outlet, but he will manage somehow. With Kurama currently there, at least there’s something from home.

TIMELINE SUMMARY:

Kuwabara stayed behind during the whole Three Kings arc, but while his friends were off fighting another tournament, Kuwabara studied hard and managed to get into Gaikou Fuzoku High School and is currently a second year student there. I will be taking him towards the end of the series, moments before Yusuke’s return. Although it’s not during a chaotic moment in his life, Kuwabara hasn’t seen Yusuke for nearly two years now. He knows his friend would come back soon, but it just feels surreal for him since it only felt like yesterday that they defeated the Toguro Brothers together.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

Kuwabara possesses the Spirit Sword, which he can call forth by concentrating his spirit energy. He can also extend the length of the sword as well as bending it at will, allowing him to not only attack his opponent from a distance, but also using it as a pole vault to reach great distances and survive falls from great heights. He has another technique that’s rarely used, in which he produces small bits of energy from his hands and throws them at his opponents.

Kuwabara also displays a sixth sense and a great one at that. With his heightened spirit awareness, Kuwabara can sense things that are paranormal, including ghosts and sometimes, even gets premonitions.
