White Collar

After extensive technical difficulties I finally saw the White Collar finale last night.

WHAT THE HELL????????

Okay, that was a fabulous episode, prior to the last second. I love how often WC seems like fans wrote it, but in a good way, it’s lovely. I love that Peter wouldn’t let anyone else handcuff Neal and covered the handcuffs with a jacket to preserve his dignity. Such a sweet and caring move. I love so very much that Neal went to Elizabeth for help and that she helped him without telling Peter and distracted the agents with milk and cookies. I love that Peter didn’t turn him in, many times: watched him go with the proudest smile after the epic jump, gave him some time to escape by pursuing the van, tried to catch him with road blocks and wanted posters (heeee) and then listened to him. That was all fabulous, though the initial mistrust made me sad. Come on, Neal isn’t that stupid. Mozzie made a fabulous lawyer and Neal was an adorable fanboy. Also, I do like that he admitted to being caught because of Peter’s pretty face. Well. Sort of.

And then we see Peter with THE RING waiting for Kate IN THE DARK holding onto a ridiculous gold cup and talking in an evil way. Erm. What?

So, I have a few thoughts about that. One, I think that Peter is evil as much as I thought Snape was after he killed Dumbledore: that is, not at all. There is something the audience doesn’t know, we are clearly missing the bigger picture, which will throw what we saw into a completely new light, I just don't know what. Making Peter evil makes no sense at all. Two, whatever is going on Elizabeth has no idea.

So, I thought that Neal orchestrated his capture in episode one because he wanted to work with Peter for some reason, (perhaps his access to FBI info? A way of finding Kate? Something) because he was caught too easily, he waited for Peter, for fuck’s sake. That thought never left my head and now it is back in full force.

We see a lot of Peter and his reactions, even when Neal cannot observe him, I know that Peter likes to be underestimated, but he is not that good an actor, I think he has genuine concerns for Neal’s well being, so I refuse to believe he’s betrayed him, without a very good reason. I mean when he finds out Neal is getting all the files the FBI has on him, he doesn’t look angry or upset, but DELIGHTED and PROUD.

Kate, otoh, we know nothing about, thus my suspicions lay on her. What we have seen has made no sense: she’s led Neal to believe she is in danger, but she is clearly free to go places and she had her own key to the hotel room and she could have told him it was Peter if she was truly on Neal’s side. Then again, she did tell him not to trust anyone and that the man with the ring is very close to him. Maybe she wants to turn him against Peter? There must be a much bigger game being played, for any of this to make sense. Or perhaps Kate is an agent and she that helped catch Neal and this is all a trap?

I would like to believe that Peter doesn’t just happen to have an evil ring he only wears when he does evil, because that’s just insane. The most likely explanation is some secret society or organisation, (maybe that's Mentor?) in which case it is possible that he isn’t the one in the picture. (He was meant to be with Neal at that time, anyway) It is also possible that he wore it to fool Neal or even found in Kate’s room.

What about Fowler? Clearly he was presented to be evil from the start and the one behind Neal’s framing, but now I am thinking was that all just a red herring? At the end he spoke to Neal quite amicably and he wasn’t there investigating him. Peter could as easily be the one that framed Neal? (Though what purpose that would serve I am not sure) Or even someone else entirely? And the fact that they were monitoring Peter suggests that they think he is doing something bad. (which, if true, I don’t believe he would do without some really good explanation) Or did Neal do it all himself, in order to get access to all those files, knowing he will get acquitted? The way Mozzie says: This was genius. I don’t know why you didn’t think of this earlier

It is interesting that Mozzie looked at everyone, with the exception of Peter. Oh and talking of Mozzie he seems to be on Neal’s beck and call and Neal trusts him implicitly, but no one is that devoted a friend. I want to know more about his motivation. And whose money did he buy the Bakery with? His own? Surely not? Neal’s? Does Neal have that much money?? (I am gonna ignore the fact that you can’t just buy a bakery in five minutes, what if it wasn’t for sale!)

Oh! Also, I was thinking about the bug in Peter’s house phone, if the information was shredded than it was in the official records, therefore it had to have been legally obtained, in which case Fowler's story checks out.

I rewatched the scene where Neal tells Peter he has been looking for Kate and shows him the photos and Peter does act a little oddly when Neal says he has spoken to her. And then when he asks about Fowler wanting something from Neal he says “Like what?” in a really weird way. And then Peter says “give him what he wants.” In the SAME words Kate uses later. So there is something that Neal knows/has, which he thinks Folwer wants and which we are led to believe Peter wants. But, what? It can’t be Neal’s hidden treasure, surely that’s not exciting enough! And Neal himself doesn’t seem to know. Anyway, Peter’s good humour only goes during that part of their conversation. Also, when Neal leaves Peter’s house, there is a lingering shot of Peter’s face where he looks all calculating.

I now want a fic about Neal’s first con, about Peter catching Neal the first time and everything leading up to it, about Neal meeting Kate and their life prior to prison. Neal and Mozzie and why they are so close. And one where Peter is a criminal mastermind and him and Neal and Elizabeth rule the world together.

Also, here is a transcript of the Pilot, which I have been searching for clues (it's not the final version, some names are different and there are a bunch of changes, for example that first morning when Peter finds Neal at June's, Neal was supposed to be swimming only to come out of the pool and towel himself off when he sees Peter like "something from a Cary Grant movie" and Peter says the anklet is like a wedding ring symbolising their inseparable bond!! I don't see why they changed this!)
