I have been wanting to watch this movie for some time. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. I first heard about this movie during spring quarter in my diverse sexualities class, we watched a movie called "Celluloid Closet" where it mostly focused on gay themes in movies and homosexual movies in general. One of the movies that was talked about in this movie was "Philadelphia" and if some of you don't know the plot, its about Tom Hanks' character who was diagnosed with AIDS and was fired from his job as lawyer because of it. He wants to sue his previous law firm for it. Denzel Washington is also in it, he plays Tom Hanks' homophobic lawyer. This is all I really know, this is what I gathered from watching scenes on youtube and reading the plot line.
Okay cool right? I just totally wanna watch this movie. Despite how sad it is. But here is why I am updating this.
As one of my favorite ways to kill time, I like cruising around on IMDB.com and reading trivias about movies and actors. I go and look at "Philadelphia"'s trivia and jesus tit fuck you guys, this is what I found.
"The protestors outside the courthouse holding signs are based on the members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, led by "Reverend" Fred Phelps. Phelps calls this movie "one of my favorite comedies"."
I don't know if this trivia is necessarily true, but I didn't wait a moment. Big tears started falling from my eyes and I basically had like a 3 minute cry session about how fucking sad that makes me. How fucking terrible it is that people like that exist. I don't know shit about this movie, but I know for fucking sure that there are REAL people dieing of AIDS and people from the Westboro Church just LAUGH at this?! Just thinking about it makes me want to cry again.
Some people...
