So I'm sitting here with my fan on high and perspiring in the inferno that my apartment has become while trying to study Biology.
It isn't working.
What I need right now is for the ice cream man to drive by and offer me a ride in his cooler. mmmmmmm cold is nice. I'd also like to get a kiddie pool for my living room then fill it with ice and let it melt.
One thing nice about the heat is that it makes everyone and everything so relaxed. I went down to Ravenna Park yesterday to read in the shade and I found this cute neighborhood grocery thing that sells wine and snacks and espresso. When I was a kid my stepdad used to make us go on these "exploratory" trips, inevitably stationed in some isolated hamlet in michigan and culnminating in a sun-baked death march. However, once in a while they turned out to be awesome. I always like exploring new cities because of that. I mean lots of times you end up stuck at a sleazy Diner called Mom's trying to remember why you ventured out that way but a good half of the time its worth the effort. Moral of this self riteous drivel? Nothing ventured nothing gained.
(Incidentally I found a new chocolate place in Wallingford that specializes in different types of hot chocolate-my favorite being Dark Vader which is a rasperry dark chocolate mix....sex.)
So in the grand tradition of Cat I have compiled a tentative of list of the rest of my summer reading
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
Running with Scissors by Augesten Burroughs
Made in America/A Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Empire Falls by Richard Russo
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel by Susannah Clarke
Three Junes by Julia Glass
Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen
Persepolis 2 by (I cannot remember how to spell her name) MS
and maybe the Whistling Season by Ivan Doig
I'll probably make it through half of these and not in that order but its a list I'm excited about . Anybody read any good cooking writing lately? I know that's kind of a weird request but I like that stuff.
One of the good parts about having a lot of time to myself is that I can get a lot done that I would otherwise neglect. I'm in the process of being interviewed to study abroad....the application is SCARY! I have to get two academic references, write a proposal for my independent study project, write two essays about myself, and compose a letter to my host family (preferably in the native language but seeing as I don't speak swahili yet...), on top of that I have to get a physical and whatnot. This is distinctly like applying to college.
This is long anough and I want to Donut from Mighty O. More to come sproadically.
