A Bottega Of One‘s Own

Ok, so I‘ve been reading a lot about the Rennaissance lately, due to my interest in the non-Ninja Leonardo ;-)
And in my readings I‘ve discovered that the 15th century Italian word for “workshop“ is bottega.
A Renaissance artist‘s workshop strikes me as being very similar to a modern SFX shop - they could be called on to build just about anything and everything, not just produce paintings and/or sculptures.

And I‘m going to have a bottega of my own VERY soon! :-D

Since we moved here my aunt and uncle have been letting me use space in their basement for working on CJ etc. But with the new business I‘ve already scored several commissions which means I‘ve been over there far more than I think any of us were expecting.

I‘m finding it hard, not just to work on CJ and my commissions but also paperwork and marketing for my business because after spending all day either at Denise‘s working on FuseFX stuff or all day at my aunt & uncle‘s my brain usually turns to mush when I get home.
Now normally I would still be able to work on costumes etc - I can rouse some energy to work on more mechanical tasks. But computer work is generally beyond me.

And I DO long for my own place. Not that I don‘t get along with my parents - I DO. But it would still be nice to have a spot that I can make entirely my own.

This is at least a partial step in that direction. I‘d been hoping to get the business going well enough that I could afford a 2 bedroom apt like the one we are currently in - large enough to both live and work comfortably and separately. But the various factors - mainly that it‘s becoming very hard to work productively in the space I have - mean that‘s not quite what is going to happen.

So we crunched some numbers and determined that right now I _could_ afford a 1 bedroom apt in our building (and I wanted it in our building because I love our location - it‘s convienient for me to get to Denise‘s from here AND I don‘t want to give up the gorgeous woods outside the building)

So for now I will technically still be living with my folks but my workshop will now be in the same building. The “messy“ workshop stuff will be in the bedroom and the living room area will be a combination sitting room/office/drawing/sewing room.

I‘ll also have a full kitchen and bathroom.

I was hoping to take it at the beginning of the month, when the other tennants moved out, but they were slobs and left the place both damaged (huge holes in the linoleum floor and the door) and a mess (we gave them almost 3 days notice I was coming to view the apt and we needn‘t have bothered - they didn‘t even try to straighten up. Or if they _did_ - I‘m scared to think of what condition it had been in before o_O ). That, and it took a long time to get the application approved because the manager was wary of my unconventional employment (even though my job is probably more secure than most right now) and also the girl in the office was new and kept forgetting to ask or let me know certain information (and would take 2 days to get back to me every time)

But I HAVE finally been approved and the last bit of the lease signing will be tonight so I will be able to take posession of my new “bottega“ Nov 16th :-D

(I was joking on FB that there needs to be a more gender-neutral term for “Man-Cave“ because I fully intend to have one - and I am no man ;-)
I may not be able to keep up with Guillermo and his Bleak House but by gosh I‘m gonna try! ;-)
I figured “Geek Cave“ would work but folks are saying that because I am on the 17th floor “Geek Nest“ “Geek Roost“ or “Geek Eyrie“ might be more appropriate ;-) )
