Dear Yuletide Writer

Here lurketh the letter:

Dear Yuletide Writer,
I love to read, and if you've got me then you probably are willing to write in a number of fandoms that I absolutely love and thus can do no wrong in my eyes. But you're probably here because you want a bit more information about my likes, dislikes, and soft vulnerable spots, so, onwards!

I am unfussed as to sexuality, polyamory, gender identity, pairing and rating, though for my Read or Die request I would indeed adore Yomiko/Donnie in some form, if that's what you are writing. I would rather a story than bare-bones smut, but smut can be delicious so please do not hold back on my account. I swear like a highly educated multi-lingual pirate when I write and speak, so don't worry about coarse language.

What I like most about my fandoms:

Read or Die (anime) - I am a bibliophile and love the bookishness of the characters, especially the intimate relationship with books and paper that anyone who recieves the code name 'The Paper' has. I love Jinbōchō, and the British Library, and Yomiko's apartment and family home, and thinking about the way these places must smell like old books.

Dark City (film) - I like the world-building and symbolism in the film, particularly hints at early psychological research and architecture through the character names, and the homage to Akira. I love crazy men in glasses and suits. Most of all I enjoyed the way that objects and the fish - first in the bowl at the start and then later in the aquarium - are used to add to the sense of surrealism that helps wake the characters up. If you haven't seen Dark City and are curious, please try to watch the Director's Cut version, instead of the cinematic release; the cinematic version is missing a lot of the establishment shots and atmosphere.

Hackers (film) - I love the posing, the inaccuracies, references and in-jokes, and the spray-painted keyboards. I like the gaming and subcultural references, and a good portion of the soundtrack. But most of all I love the geekiness of it, and the way that Mr. The Plague as the central villain is more similar to Dade Murphy than he is to any of his colleagues or the other antagonistic characters, and thus is far more sinister (if anyone in Hackers can be called that).

Hellblazer (comics) - I love the atmosphere. I love that John isn't afraid to be a complete and utter bastard, and that Chas isn't afraid to tell him so. I love that the world is dangerous and occult, and that Chas drives a cab. I love the idea of an unromantic London, the unsanitised and unassuming nature of magic and ritual in this universe.

I have read in some posts here and there that it can help a writer to know more about the reader, so here you go: I'm in my 20s, Australian, have a degree. I spend nearly all my days reading books and listening to prog, metal and classical music pieces that I can never recall the names of. It is always time for tea at my house, though teatime varies depending on whimsy. I intensely dislike the colour pink, also grand romantic gestures. I was once given a pink cabbage teapot in a grand romantic gesture, and am quite attached to it. I think it is because the folds of cabbage leaves on the spout make me think of subliminal labial propaganda.

Things I particularly love include strong fact-checking or research, character focused pieces, and banter. But as I said above, just liking these fandoms enough to volunteer to write in one or more of them is enough to ensure my love and appreciation. I live to see through fanfiction the different ways that fans interpret and enjoy canon material, and I can't wait to see what your perspective on it all is.

Things that actively turn me off include incest, present tense narratives, weddings, violations of the laws of physics, non-con, use of Japanese words without reason, and paedophilia/ephebophila, so please let's have none of that if it can be avoided. I'm Australian, and not as well immersed in American media as some of my compatriots are, so if there's any non-canon related American history or culture, a bit more detailed description in the story or some notes at the end will save me a trip down Search Engine Street. Finally I'm an apathetically unfussed vegetarian. I don't have any problem with carnivores and omnivores, but I probably won't enjoy a fic that focuses solely on the juicy taste sensations of meat.

That's about all the things I can think of. I hope that this has been useful to you, if you needed it. I hope you enjoy writing as much as I'll enjoy reading, and once again I'm really just delighted to think that someone out there likes one or more of my requested fandoms.

Love from kurushi.
