Forensic Mock Dig

Sep 21, 2007 22:23

Twas fun, in a way. Supervising is definitely less awesome than just doing it. And supervising a bunch of anthropology majors trying to dig in a straight line was... weird. Today's weather was wonderful for a dig! Sunny but not too warm, cool but not freezing. People kept whining about the workload, the weather, everything.

I resisted the urge to swat at them with my clipboard.

They had this air of competence, and did not listen overmuch to anything any supervisor said, but failed to comprehend basic ideas, like the date, their own names, and NORTH.

North was at a 45 degree angle to the grid, but at the end of the day half of our context maps had north pointing to the top, which means that half of all the sheets are misaligned. It's not too bad for us, cos we're going to place the thing into another grid anyway, but it's frustrating to think that these people will be "qualified" to consult with police.

That said, Kathy said that the police called their new shiny dumpy "that distance measuring thingie", which ignores completely a dumpy's main use and the name written IN BIG LETTERS ON THE SIDE. So if that's their level, having seven different points of north will be a step up. I mean, at least they'll be trying to record north.

So I'm exhausted and my legs ache. My right foot still hurts, and although I thought it was generic pain I'm starting to suspect that either my boots or my old runners have lost some integral part of their arch support. I slowly made it into civic with Linz, and then serendipitously met Rita, my new roomie, on the bus home.

Yesterday I met Luisa on the bus! I'm having fine bus luck this week.

bus, uni, incompotent wankers, housemates
