they at least could have the cute one being gay? i can't stand marissa to begin with and now we have to watch her "experiment"...

Sapphic Swing for 'The O.C.'
As poor little rich girl Marissa Cooper on "The O.C.," Mischa Barton has overdosed in Tijuana, mopily dated both a brooding guy from Chino and an expressionless gardener, and callously abused some innocent patio furniture while emitting a blood-curdling scream. What's next for the dour damsel? Some ratings-boosting girl-on-girl action, of course.
Series creator Josh Schwartz confirms that Barton's alter ego will get the warm-fuzzies for a member of the same sex beginning in January. "Marissa is at a point in her life where she's trying to find herself and her true identity," he tells Out magazine. "There's another character who she really connects with. It's a girl, which is not something Marissa may have anticipated. But she's willing and game to explore and experiment with that."
The upcoming Sapphic storyline echoes a similar twist on the now defunct "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," in which wicca-riffic Willow (Alyson Hannigan) fell for witchy Tara (Amber Benson). Of course, the seeds of Willow's same-sex leanings were planted long before she acted on them. On "The O.C.," we have yet to see Marissa so much as check out Summer (Rachel Bilson) in her bikini.
Schwartz insists the plotline isn't a ploy to boost the Fox show's less-than-boffo numbers. "We cooked it up well before the show ever premiered this year," he explains to the mag. "We're constantly looking at evolving and growing these characters. And challenging them. They're at that age where they're open to it. It was either that or Oliver's return."
Schwartz's invocation of the dreaded moniker should send a chill through viewers desperate to forget last season's much-reviled manipulative rich kid character, he of the imaginary girlfriend and Marissa obsession. We think we speak for every fan as we say, to quote Summer, "Ewwwwwwwww."
