A few photos of New York City.

I really enjoyed playing tourist in New York on Tuesday. It was a bit pricy on the whole, and next time I decide to go I'm definitely going to try to leave earlier. (Also, going to try to find a route in to a reasonable parking place other than via the ridiculously pricy tolls-both-ways Whitestone Bridge.)

Anyways, I had lunch at Singa's Pizza in Queens, which was kinda average in my book despite the high ratings it's got on Yelp. Excellent crust, decently fresh toppings, VERY affordable (a 10" pizza plus a bottle of Diet Coke was under $9 with tax), but the sauce just left me unimpressed. From there, I parked on the street next to the private-lot shopping center in which Singa's resides, then walked the wrong way on 90th Street to get to the Metro Station I wanted. I ended up boarding at Woodhaven Blvd., rode into Manhattan, and got off at 86th Street near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

By the time I reached it, sadly, it was past 2:30 -- I seriously need to leave earlier next visit, and possibly take my bike as well for gadding about more swiftly. (Must find out -- are bikes allowed on the subway?) Since I knew I wanted to take the Circle Line cruise at 4:30, which was over near 42nd Street and on Pier 83, I decided not to pay the $20 entrance fee for the museum. Next time! Instead I went walking through Central Park.

Then south, in search of the well-hidden subway station purportedly at 59th St. and 5th Ave. (I never actually found it.)

Eventually I simply walked down to 53rd and 5th, and rode the subway from there out to the Port Authority stop. A brisk four-or-five-block walk brought me to Pier 83, where I paid the $34 Circle Line cruise entry fee and settle down to relax for three hours. The cruise was surprisingly fun... and I ended up taking a lot of pictures. (Love, love, LOVE the fact that my camera's multi-gig memory stick can take over 1500 1600x1200 8.0 megapixel shots, and said camera still fits easily in my pocket.)

I only took about 90 pictures in all, and skimmed those down to put the ones I liked best up on Flickr. So there's plenty more shots to be seen on my Flickr photostream.

Driving back to Massachusetts was actually the most trying part of the day. There was some very poorly plannet roadwork being done on I-95, which led to myself and hundreds of other vehicles getting stuck trying to merge from three lanes down to one. Five miles or more of backed up traffic at 10 pm at night, UGH.

The late-night aggravation aside (I left NYC at 8:30 pm and got home just short of 1 am, whereas the drive in took me maybe three and a half hours tops), I had a really fun time and look forward to making the trip again in the not-too-distant future.

Any New Yorkers have recommendations on things to see and places to go next time I visit? I already have a bit of a list thanks to azephirin, but New York's big enough that I suspect I could spends weeks there and barely scratch the surface.
