I don't think it's a short joke. If it is, then I don't get it. It seems he was genuinely surprised to realize Kurt is taller than Blaine "now." And considering Kurt has always been taller than Blaine which may not have been so initially obvious in Blaine's first episode, it has been so since about the latter half of Season 2, (I looked at the videos to be sure and I can see how someone might not notice the height difference at first; but it becomes pretty obvious by BioTA.) it means he hasn't seen Kurt and Blaine standing together much ... WHICH MEANS HE DOESN"T REALLY WATCH THE SHOW!
AND THAT to me finally totally explains the "Kurtofsy shipping" ... or rather, how the guy managed to interpret that the Karofsky storyline included a real potential for a romantic relationship between Kurt and Karofsky. He does not really watch much of the show and what little he does, he doesn't pay attention. Ok, maybe it's not his cup of tea; but since an aspect of his job includes reporting on it with some degree of knowledge, I think it irresponsible and unprofessional to report and offer opinions without really watching. In a nutshell, what I think is going on here is he knew they revealed Karofsky is gay so his brain kinda went, "Karofsky is gay male character, Kurt is a gay male character. They will probably hook up at some point," and then maybe he went to some online fan forum or just asked fans to write him about their opinions and he ran into some Kurtofsky shippers, so his mind then went "Oh, the fans really want Kurt to be with this Karofsky character." So when he interviewed people from the show he'd ask questions like, "The fans really want Kurt to get together with Karofsky, when is that going to happen?" I don't think a reporter who actually watched and paid attention to the show would ever ask a question like that.

Oh yes I remember that! That struck me as very weird, I hated that he asked/said that to both Chris and Max (though Max had the better answer truth to be told) I know there is a fanbase (just like theres still one for Kum) and its quite a vocal one too, but by no means (numbers wise) large (at least that's what it seems to me from my admittedly bias perspective).
Kurtofsky is summed up for me as they are two gay characters...that's it. I could say more but I don't want to venture into the wanky/bashing territory :) So let's jut say I'm glad Karofsky has not returned. I do feel some sympathy for him but not enough to want him near Kurt again.
I saw it as a joke because its always been obvious that Chris is taller than Darren. Both Chris and Darren have commented on the height difference, Darren even referring to himself as a hobbit. *shrugs* I just don't get how he didn't know. Colfer has had an AMAZING transformation over all the series but even Never Been Kissed he was taller, less noticeable than it is now sure, but defo taller. Then it's the tone, he sounds very mocking like he's making fun of Darren. I mean the "memo" thing is a joke obv so I assumed the height thing is as well. But no it doesn't seem like a joke in that it just isn't funny. Like at all...I hope it wasn't a joke cause then damn he has a bad sense of humour...
