Suddenly, he reached out, snapping the box shut and letting out a heavy sigh. Blaine had bought the ring two weeks ago, after having finally decided that it was time. He and Kurt had been together for nine years now. They'd made it through the year apart during Blaine's senior year, four years of college spent in a shoebox apartment and through the trials it took trying to make it as a composer and costume designer in the big city. They were living comfortably finally and they were even about to host both of their families for Christmas.
Blaine was ready. He was certain that Kurt was ready. When he had seen the ring at one of the stores Kurt had dragged him to for Black Friday, he knew that it was the one. Now if he could only figure out how to propose.
He sat back, putting his hands behind his head, taking a deep breath and thinking back to his first Christmas with Kurt. It had been so easy, the gum wrapper ring. Hell, if he had just gone along with Kurt then and let it be an engagement ring, he wouldn't have to do this right now. Then it hit him.
Blaine scrambled up from the coach and into the small guest room that Kurt already had prepared for Carole and Burt's arrival. He opened the closet door, reaching up onto the shelf for the clear plastic tote that Kurt had labeled "high school". Putting it on the bed, he lifted off the lid, smiling at the two graduation caps laying on top side by side. He sifted through the contents, laying them gently on the bed. Before long, he found what he was looking for.
He sat down heavily, popping open the small red box. There, pristine as ever, was the juicy fruit wrapper ring. Kurt had worn it on special occasions throughout the rest of his senior year and well into his sophmore year of college before he put it in the memories box. He assured Blaine that he wanted to keep it forever, but he was getting a little too old for a gum wrapper ring. Blaine smiled softly to himself. It would be perfect.
Blaine was putting the finishing touches on dinner when Kurt came in, dropping his bag on the entrance table and shrugging out of his coat. "Honey, I'm home."
Blaine laughed lightly, coming out of the kitchen to give Kurt a kiss, "I just got dinner on the table, how was work?"
Kurt smiled, following Blaine to the table as he spoke, "It was fine, but our lead twisted her ankle, so I'm going to have to refit all of her costumes to her understudy and that girl is four sizes smaller. There is going to be so much-" Kurt stopped short, seeing the box sitting on his plate, "What's this?"
Blaine just grinned, "Open it."
Kurt opened it, seeing his old ring. He ran his fingers over it softly, then pulled it out. He gasped and nearly dropped it when he felt the heavier ring inside of it. He turned to Blaine, "Blaine..." he stared, his eyes starting to shine.
Blaine dropped to one knee, grasping Kurt's hand that was still holding the pair of rings, "Kurt, I have loved you since I was sixteen years old and I know that I am going to love you forever." Her took the rings, carefully pulling the newer one out and setting the old one on the table, "I want to grow old with you and have kids with you and keep having so many Christmases with you. Will you marry me?"
A tear slipped down Kurt's face even as he smiled so big his eyes went all squinting. He nodded quickly, "Yes, yes, of course yes." Dropping to his knees as well, Kurt took Blaine's face in his hands, kissing him hard. "Yes. I would have said yes then and I'll say yes now and I'll say yes forever. Yes."
