Galleys are advance copies from the publisher, which means two significant things: yes, you'd be getting to read the book quite a while before it gets published, but you'd also be reading an unfinished copy, with edits to the text and cover -- if the galley even has an illustrated cover -- still being extremely likely before official publication. (Galleys are legal, though, as long as they are freely given, not sold.) There's no guarantee the publisher will have enough copies for all the requests they're likely to get, but, if you're interested, give it a shot!
