“Blaine, come on, this is -“ Kurt didn’t even finish his sentence, since he was laughing again. The slight buzz in his head seemed to distract him from anything rational and made everything seem funny.
“No, Kurt, come on. Just climb up the ladder.” Blaine sounded so cheerful, and it’s not like Kurt can say no to him anyway. Blaine was giggling again, probably an effect off the champagne. “Come, here,” he said while reaching out so he could pull up Kurt for the last bit. And then they were both sitting in the tree house in Blaine’s gigantic backyard.
“So tell me again why we are up here?” Kurt prompted him while taking the bottle of champagne from him. He took a swing from the bottle and putted it down next to him.
“Because the fireworks are prettier to see up here. And because the party was lame and drunk Warblers and New Direction members are no fun.”
“Right.”
There was an easy silence in between them, the music from the party back in Blaine’s house slowly drifting through the air. Blaine reached past Kurt to get hold of the bottle of champagne and took a swing. Neither of them had any intention to get drunk, given all their experience with alcohol, but the slight buzz in their head was pleasant and it was New Years Eve after all, so it seemed justified.
“Any New Year’s resolutions?” Kurt asked.
“Hm. Not really. Not something big as I had some of the last years. Maybe try to give my Dad another change? I don’t know.” Blaine answered. “You?”
“I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions, remember.” Kurt nudged him a lightly. Blaine knew that all too well.
“I know, I know,” he replied softly.
They fell silent again, both gazing at the dark sky, now only filled with stars, soon to be filled with fireworks. They both took turns taking swings from the bottle leaned lightly onto each other. They heard the people at the party inside counting down.
Six…
Five…
Four…
Both boys turned to each other and looked each other in the eye.
Three…
Two…
One…
They leaned in at the same time and their lips met in the middle.
Happy New Year!
They parted and opened their eyes. “Happy New Year, Kurt,” Blaine whispered.
“Happy New Year,” Kurt whispered just as softly, leaning in for another kiss, and another.
Neither of the boys knew how the rest of the year was going to go, let alone end, but in this exact moment, they were together, and they couldn’t be happier.
