State of the Comm

Jun 29, 2011 21:31

HEY EVERYBODY! Your lovely mods are here today with a fun and exciting MOD NOTE! \o/ YAY!

Wait! Don't go! Look, I have gifs!

Between Chris' ass and Darren's crazy dancing, we're sure to have gained everyone's attention.

boysinperil is up first!

You guys. YOU GUYS. As of this writing, we have 5,692 members. We average something like 30 posts A DAY. We've had some spats, but mostly it's been an amazing and wild ride, and we thank you for coming along.

Niniblack's going to talk about rules while Rebootuniverse 'splains How Not to be a Douche, and I want to talk to you a minute about all that stuff you see on the sidebar, over there ----->

These first three are pretty obvious, but really important to be familiar with.

Rules Post
Page-a-Mod
A Guide To Not Bashing

Rec Posts - our weekly recommendation post, usually hosted by niniblack
Friending Post - the most recent should be linked here; we try to do them semi-regularly
Glee Live - for ALL Glee Live stuff, from videos to meetups to tickets
Current Prompt Post - for leaving and filling story ideas
Meet-Up Post - for meeting up for anything from watch parties to minicons
Finders Post - Are you looking for a specific fic? Need to know what the US school system is like? Wonder if anyone knows what episode a scene happened in? This is the place to ask. Everyone should have this post tracked.
Banners of Kurt_Blaine Past - because we have some awesome art.
Services/Beta Post - another fic resource, along with Finders - these are people who have offered to answer questions about everything from boarding schools to French language issues, and/or to beta fic.
What Tag Should I Use? - Another to be familiar with, check this before posting unless you're sure you've got your tags right (it'll save us and you some time)
Tags - This is our cloud link, and browsing through tags is a good way to find what you're looking for

Hey guys, niniblack here! So, the Chinese government has to have rules, or else we would just be... some other country without any rules, like United Kurtdom. (Although I think there's a dress code there.) But anyway, we've updated them!

Please take a couple minutes to read through this post, because if you're a member we're going to expect that you've read everything and expect you to follow these rules. You reading them now saves us having to ask you to modify or delete your post later.

We've also written up some more detailed guidelines about headers, warnings, ratings, and spoilers for your fic/art/etc posts, so be sure to read that section so that you know what we expect you to include in a header.

This community is very fast paced. If your post is breaking the rules or isn’t relevant to the comm, it might be deleted without warning. If you’re wondering why your post was deleted, contact us on the Page-A-Mod post and we can let you know the reason and how to edit it to avoid having future posts deleted.

As a member of this comm, we expect you to have read these rules, any and all mod posts, and to abide by them. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse for breaking them and if you're breaking the rules you will be banned.

No Bashing
We don’t allow bashing of characters or other members or, well, anyone on this comm. Please read our guide on bashing so that you know what we will and will not accept. Anyone breaking this rule will have their post or comments screened, and if you continue to break this rule you will be banned.

Don't delete screened comments!
If we screen your comments for any reason, please do not delete them. Screened comments can only be seen by you, the mods, and the OP of the post. There are four mods and we aren't always online at the same time, so when you delete comments it gets confusing when we're trying to tell each other "This happened, over here" but there's just a string of "Deleted post" messages left and half the conversation is missing. It's also impossible to us to understand your side of a disagreement if your posts aren't there anymore.

Don't screen comments on your own posts!
When you make a post on the comm, you have the ability to screen comments on it. Don't. Only mods are allowed to screen comments and if we catch you doing this you will be banned.

If someone has done something against the rules in the comments of your post, let us know about on the page-a-mod post and we will deal with it.

Spoiler Policy
All spoilers must be behind an LJ cut. (There’s a guide on how to make an LJ cut here.)

Spoilers must have a legitimate source. Spoilers without a source or that come from a wiki, anons on tumblr, or My Neighbor's Grandma's Hairdresser's Cousin will be deleted. If you're not sure whether or not your source is legitimate, ask us first.

Something is considered a spoiler until a week after the episode has aired in the US. This includes teasers on icon, picspam, fanart posts, etc., along with summaries and author’s notes on fanfic posts.

This policy also applies to the icons that you use on the comm. If you’re making a post or commenting on a post that is not tagged as !spoilers, then your icon cannot contain spoilers. If the post is tagged as a spoiler post, then you can use icons with spoilers in the comments, but not where they will show up on the main page.

Stay On-Topic
This is a Kurt and Blaine shipping comm. Anything you post here must be relevant to either Kurt, Blaine, Chris, or Darren.

For example, despite the fact he’s playing Kurt’s father, we don’t allow posts with interviews from Mike O’Malley, unless there’s a portion of the interview where he's discussing Kurt/Chris or Blaine/Darren and only the relevant portions of the interview with a link to the original source are allowed in the post. If you post an interview with Mike O’ Malley talking entirely about how he was a host of Nickelodeon’s “Guts" and one short line at the very bottom of the interview where it mentions him being on “Glee" playing Kurt Hummel’s father, it's going to get deleted.

Though we allow fanfic, fan art and discussion that includes Kurt or Blaine paired off with other characters, Kurt/Blaine must also be there and should be a primary or equal pairing (we also allow threesomes, etc). If your post, comment or fan work doesn’t fit within the criteria above then it probably doesn’t belong on this community. If you're not sure, don't hesitate to ask us first.

Double Posting
Only one post is allowed for polls, events, and interviews (comment on the original post if you have new content). If you are posting fic/art/etc, make only one post per day (24 hours) or consolidate chapters/artwork/etc into one post to avoid spamming the comm. The easiest way to consolidate chapters is to post them on your own journal, and then make a post here on the comm with links to each chapter. This policy includes fics that are too long for one post, but aren't chaptered.

Discussions
We're fine with discussions that may arise, but remember that you won’t always agree with everyone and not everyone will agree with you. No character bashing, flaming, wank-baiting, or general assholery will be tolerated. (See Reboot's discussion later in this post.) If you think something is against our rules, let us know about it here. We try to catch everything, but we have to sleep sometimes. Please take a little initiative and report anything you think we’ve missed that goes against our rules or makes you uncomfortable. Running off to Tumblr, Twitter or elsewhere to complain about it does little to help us or the community.

Tags
A guide on which tags should be used can be found here. If you think we need a new one, let us know on the Page-A-Mod post.

Downloads
All episode and music downloads must be locked to the comm. This includes fanmixes and fanvid downloads.

Promos
Any and all promotions-including new/other comms, RPs, contests, charity & fan campaigns, fan-created merchandise, etc.-must be approved by a mod first.

Twitter
The cast posts on Twitter all the time, but every tweet doesn’t need it’s own post. If they tweet a spoiler or make an announcement about something via Twitter, however, a new post can be made about it.

Recs and Fic Searches
Recs are only allowed at the Weekly Rec Post. If you're searching for a fic (or anything else!) use our Finding Post.

Ticket Sales
Posts about ticket sales are not allowed. If you want to sell/trade tickets to Glee Live, you can start a thread on the Glee Live post. Any other shows go on the meet-up post. Don’t post personal information like the location of seats, your address, etc in these posts, keep it to PM or email. Any purchases and monetary exchanges are entirely at members’ discretions.

Meet-ups
We have a general meet-up post and also one dedicated to Glee Live. Start a new thread on one of these posts if you want to arrange a meet-up with other comm members. DO NOT post any personal information like your address, the exact time/location of your meet-up, etc in these posts, keep it to PM or email. Any posts containing private contact information will be screened or deleted.

LJ Cuts
All large posts should be under a cut. This includes fic, art, video embeds, etc. Here's a how-to on making an LJ cut if you haven't done one before. Check the comm after you post something and make sure your post looks alright, because if your post breaks our comm layout we will delete it.

Headers
Please standardize your header and use an LJ cut for fic, artwork, vids, etc. Please use the standard font size and colors when you’re posting fic. It makes everything much easier to read!

This is the recommended format:

Media: (ex. Fic, Art, etc)
Title:
Rating:
Pairings:
Spoilers (if any): Episode #
Warnings (if any):
Word Count:
Summary:
Author’s Note (if any):

Warnings
You must warn for any triggering content in your fic or fan art. There’s a great guide to common triggers and how to label your fic here. Examples of common triggers that you should warn for are:
non-con/dub-con and sexual assault
incest
suicide
character death/murder
abuse (domestic, physical, sexual, or child abuse)
kidnapping
violence
homophobic language
self-harm
mental illness
alcoholism/drug addiction
bullying

Kinks and squicks aren’t the same thing as triggers, but are most often listed in the warning section of a header. It’s best to let people know what kinks are in your fic, so they can avoid things they don’t like.

If your fic doesn’t contain any content that needs to be warned for, then you can take the warning section out or just say “none". Things like boy kissing, m/m, gay sex, and who's top or bottom in a smut fic are not warnings. (Have you seen our comm headers?) Things like “excessive fluff" and “unbetaed’ are also not warnings, and these sorts of things can be mentioned in your author’s note.

If there’s content in your fic that should have been warned for in your header, we’ll ask you to edit the header and, if you don’t, will delete your post.

Ratings
Our rating system is based on the system used for American movies and television.

G - There isn’t any content that would be objectionable. No swearing. Any violence is mild and doesn’t depict blood/gore. Examples of G rated films are Winnie the Pooh, Mulan, and Toy Story.

PG - Contains mild swearing, smoking, suggestive humor, and mild violence. There may be kissing, but no mentions of sex. Examples of PG rated films are Star Wars, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and Harry Potter movies 1-3.

PG-13 - This is what all Glee episodes are rated. There can by sex references, explicit language (but not an excessive amount), drug innuendo, strong crude/suggestive humor, mature/political themes, and moderate violence. If it’s something you’d see on an episode of Glee, then it’s PG-13. Examples of PG-13 rated films are Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Titanic, and Harry Potter movies 4-7.

R - Contains non-explicit sex scenes, strong violence with blood and gore, strong horror scenes, and explicit/illegal/prolonged drug use. Swearing can be more severe and frequent. Examples of R rated films are Fight Club, Clerks, and Apocalypse Now.

NC-17 - Contains porn, graphic violence with loads of blood and gore, explicit sex scenes, and depraved behavior. Examples of NC-17 rated films are Mysterious Skin, and the unedited versions of films like Saw.

Spoilers in Fanfic/Art
Please mention any spoilers in your fic or art. We consider episodes spoilers until a week after their US air date, so we ask that you also mention the latest episode that your fic contains spoilers for. This is a good way to let readers know when your story takes place in relation to Glee’s timeline, and you don’t need to include anything other than the name or number of the episode.

How To Not Be A Douche by rebootuniverse

The rules on what counts as bashing and bannable dickery are laid out on our guide to not bashing post and throughout our rules. As always, if you break any of those rules multiple times and with intention myself and the other mods will notify you and discuss it amongst ourselves if we feel you should be banned.

And then we'll probably ban you & stuff because that's just how we roll. Or we'll just forget.

But this is different. It's more of a guide on posting and discussion ettiquite to keep the wank and douchebaggery on the comm down.

1. You're entitled to your opinion, someone else is entitled to disagree with you, we're entitled to screen any comments that are (a) wank baiting or (b) bashing.

There are a lot of discussions on the community, especially during the off season. Since a lot of this discussion is about Chris Colfer's ass (and rightfully so, magnificence deserves praise) we don't have a lot of problems. But every once in a while civil arguments turn into people being dicks.

If you find yourself in a situation where you feel like being a dick or are conversing with one, close the tab and leave it alone. It's an argument on the internet, it might feel important but it's never as important as Chris Colfer's ass. Always remember that.

If you feel like someone else is being so much of a dick that it breaks our rules, let us know on the page-a-mod post. If you don't, chances are we won't notice it because we were busy with the butt talk. You can complain about it all you want on your journal, or twitter, or tumblr, but if you let us know we can actually put a stop to it.

2. Read The Headers

People who write fic and draw art and do other such fannish things generally tend to make headers for the post so people know what they're getting in to.

So if a person puts Kurt/Howard Bamboo and warns for non-con in their header, you would look like kind of a douche for leaving a comment on that fic about how gross KurtWard is and how OOC it is that Kurt would top because he's such a bottom.

While we can do something if the fic was posted to the comm and a comment breaks rules, only you can stop yourself from being a douche. Didn't like a pairing in a fic? Read the header and not the fic. Not a fan of figging or blow jobs? Read the header and not the fic.

If someone fails to put stuff like that in their header, then please don't hesitate to let us know. We'll take the proper action make sure the person changes it or it is deleted. Otherwise, you should be able to police yourself in what you should and should not be reading. And why commenting about how icky something that you shouldn't have read is not always the best idea.

NOTE: This is not about all negative comments. If someone is commenting on the fic or the representation of the kink or pairing, it's not the same as "Ew, why would anyone write about Kurt eating Blaine's eyebrows? You're gross."

3. Make Sure All The Necessary Information Is In Your Header

Seriously, dude.

4. Not Every Contrary Opinion Needs To Be Contradicted

Just know when to comment, and when to let things go. You are not always right about everything, and neither is the person you're arguing with, but when you both spend 200 comments arguing, it's hard to stop things from escalating into douchiness.

5. And Finally, Get Perspective

Like Holly Holiday said, it's hard not to be a bitch on the internet. But at the end of the day it's the goddamn internet, there's about as much importance in those arguments as there is in youtube comments. This is all for fun, and that might mean long rambly conversations about the single ladies dance, or a serious discussion about the Prom Queen episode and it's ramifications. What it doesn't mean is being a docuhe.

And remember that sometimes the person you think is being a dick may not even realize it, so sometimes walking away is better.

No one wants to be an asshat, it messes up their hair.

Anything else I put here would just be more common sense stuff, but the last one is probably the most important. Don't let silly things like a comment turn you into a jerk or ruin your day. Ignore it, back click, exit tab.

And if coming to the community to be a douche was your intention, then please don't let the close button hit you on the way out.

That's it folks! Feel free to ask questions/state opinions/write sonnets/post gifs about anything in this post. :D You guys are all awesome!
