3. And I feel like

No more waiting by the shutters.

Kurogane left the gate hanging on its hinges, took the crumbly steps two at a time, and banged on the door. He kept one hand on the knife in his bag. He was ready.

When the door opened, Kurogane swept Ginryu out and pressed its tip against the man's throat. The sunset tinted the blade red.

"If you ever-" Kurogane snarled.

The man stepped back, his smile faltering. A single bead of blood trickled down his neck.

"Fai?"

"Kurogane?" Fai said. "You gave me a scare!" He looked hurriedly out at the street and tried to shut the door on his friend's face, but Kurogane blocked it with a casual hand. Fai smiled, but the smile was fraying at the edges. He stared distractedly at Kurogane before turning away.

He fiddled with the sash of his bathrobe.

"Where is he?" Kurogane demanded.

"Reed won't be in for a while," Fai said softly. "If that's who you mean."

"When?"

"Kuro-chan, wouldn't you rather go home..."

"No, I'd rather you go home! I'll take care of him."

Fai slipped his hand into Kurogane's and led him down the hall. The door clicked shut behind them.

"Are you going to kill him?" Fai asked.

"Why do you care?"

Fai led Kurogane into a stuffy bedroom hung with heavy blue drapes. "Killing's…not nice, Kuro-poo." He sat on the bed and patted the spot beside him. Kurogane found himself sitting down. A weakness, he had acquired a weakness in a bad place. "Give that knife to me, Kurogane."

The satin sheets caught on his calloused fingertips. The hilt in his hand was cold, clumsy.

"Anyone who hurts my family, I will kill," Kurogane said. He forced Fai to look at him. "You're my family. You're mine."

"You say that, but you won't sleep with me." Fai sighed dramatically.

"Because I don't like messing around!"

Fai laughed. He laughed so hard the bed shook. He fell back onto the bed and rolled over and covered his face and laughed. "What a mess," he hiccuped. "What a joke.

"Do you remember what we did that first night, Kuro-rin?" Fai smiled like he knew the answer.

Kurogane flushed. "The name's Kurogane," he snapped. "Can't you get that simple thing right, you idiot?" And then. "…No, I don't remember much."

"I'll tell you…if you sleep with me."

"Goddammit, you're a whore. Don't you get sick of fucking?"

"Actually…" Fai rolled to the side, pressed his face into a pillow. There was a long, frightening pause. "I was hoping," he said quietly. "It would cure this. That if we had sex, I'd stop-" Fai laughed, without mirth.

"Stop what?"

"This-Let go, Kuro-pipi! You're hurting me!" Kurogane had seized Fai's wrists and pinned them down above his head.

Tell the truth, he demanded with his eyes."Stop squirming, idiot, and tell me."

"Noo…it doesn't matter, Kuro-pon."

"Fai…Are you in love with me?"

Fai fell silent and closed his eyes, his head turned to the side as if awaiting a slap.

"Because I'm in love with you, idiot. Just in case you couldn't tell."

Fai swallowed. "It's not love," he said. "It's lust. Love…I'm not good-Nnnngh!"

The smile briefly disintegrated. A single tear rolled down his cheek. Fai stared in horror at the damp spot it left on the sheets. "Kurogane," he hissed. "Don't say things like that!"

Kurogane had let Ginryu fall off the side of the bed. It lay there beside Fai's slippers. Looking up, Fai saw a smile, a tiny, beautiful smile on Kurogane's world-weary face. "Don't cry, idiot. Is it really such a bad thing to be loved?"

Fai knew he didn't deserve that smile.

"It is…" Every word hurt to say. "When you're the reason he hurts me." Fai wanted desperately to close his eyes to make it easier, but he had to be convincing, this one last time. "He sees you waiting for me and it makes him jealous…Kuro-sama, maybe it's best if you...stay away from me."

Distantly, the click of a lock turning.

There was an inscrutable expression on Kurogane's face. "I'm not leaving you."

"You want me hurt?" Fai demanded harshly. "You're that selfish?"

"I don't know what you're trying to pull, but I'm not leaving you."

A door slammed shut.

Fai didn't know whether he should laugh or cry. He had failed. Reed was coming and Kurogane was still here.

"Go away! Please trust me and go away!"

"No."

"Then-Then listen, Kurogane," Fai's voice shook. "I always thought lust was love. I didn't need love, I always tried to-" Inaudibly. "Kill it."

"Where's my pretty?" Footsteps coming down the hall. "Where could he be?"

"I want you to hear this from me. I fell in love when I was younger. I did an unforgivable-"

The door swung open.

"I killed a woman and I killed our child. Now run!"

The tall, monocled man at the door knelt and picked up Ginryu, turning the knife in his hands. He had salt and pepper hair, was dressed smartly in a pinstripe suit; he was cold, executive. His fingers were fat with rings.

At the holster on his hip hung a gun.

"Look under the bed," the man said to Kurogane, "If you don't believe him."
