Hey hey ppl! It's your favorite (I hope) non-updater with some awesome news!
First a bit of background - I'm going back to school for my Master's degree this Fall. I'm attending school here in Champaign. As such, because I wasn't born here or have lived here for an eternity or, I dunno, bled into this very soil, they refuse to classify me as an in-state resident. Which means that they are free to charge me the BIG bucks for tuition. And I mean big. I don't understand why a state school costs as much for me to go as say...Harvard. But anyway. So after stressing about the cost for months, and then stressing about the staggering amount of loans I have to take out and subsequently PAY BACK later, I get an email on Monday informing me that my "appointment letter" is ready and I need to sign it by JUly 31.
"Appointment for what?" - me
"For the Fall class you're teaching." - them
"For the who in the whatwherenow?" - me
"Please help this brainless twit" - them (forwarding my confusion to another person)
"Oh hai! Yeah, I guess we forgot to ask if you'd like this assistantship. Um, it's in your major, you get a monthly stipend that exceeds your paycheck at your last full-time job, oh and it pays all of your tuition. You just need to pay for the fees and stuff, no more than $700 or so. You wants it?" -the other, actually helpful, person
"Hot DAMN! Yes I wants it! I can haz free tuition?" - me
"Yes! U rly can haz free tuition!" - helpful person (may possibly be a lolcat in disguise)
Holy monkey on a stick! YAHOO! Apparently I, and select other classmates, were chosen for this teaching position based on: need (hahahahah!), previous experience (obviously they didn't weigh that one too much in my case), the recommendations from my applications (yay team!), and the bs-filled essay we wrote FOR our applications (thank you for teh writin' skillz, Jaysus!).
I get a monthly stipend (money?!?! OMG!), an office, keys (to Narnia?), and a class of my very own to teach (oh yeah, that....it's an ESL writing course...I'll be teaching non-native speakers how to write essays and/or research papers). I get to go to departmental meetings! I have OFFICE HOURS! I feel so grown-up (sniff sniff).
So there you are...one mega-lucky day I had to start the week off. Yayz!
And now I must go get dressed 'cause my sister and niece are heading here to spend the night and take a trip to Chicago. Oh the excitement!
Jaa, mata ne!
