Have you tried VirtualDub? That can convert most things into a regular AVI.

You open up whatever file you want (assuming you have the latest version MKV files also work as well as AVIs) and click "save as", where it gives you the option to save it as an AVI, which you should be able to then plug into Vegas.

Save as old format AVI or just AVI? It got some dialog along the lines of "this file is already being used in another process."
