The plan was to go swim and then get a hair cut.
I woke up early Saturday morning, ate a quick breakfast and went to the Sports Center. Since it'll take Jones 30 minutes to reach the Sports Center, I ate another greasy breakfast at McDo. By 10am, we started our swim training. We left before the pool closes at 11:30.
When we left the Sports Center, the flood water was ankle deep so we decided to try going to Robinsons MetroEast. There are no jeepneys so we decided to wait at the terminal. Danilo arrived a few minutes later.
We decided to try taking the tricycle so we walked to the terminal. Flood water rose to knee-deep all of a sudden so we decided to seek refuge at Red Ribbon. We had some snacks and left Red Ribbon when the water reached inside the store. Also, there were flying cockroaches invading the establishment.
We went back to the Sports Center when the flood water reached our thighs. We went to the third floor and stayed there. We never thought we'd be staying there for the whole night.
At around 4pm, the flood water was neck deep, by 6pm, the whole first floor was under water.
There were no food and water, and hundreds of people were stranded with us. We were able to buy a bottle of Gatorade before the small store at the canteen ran out of stock of, well, anything.
I called home a couple of times and dad said flood water reached inside the house as well. First time flood reached inside the house in 21 years of living there. He said he sent mom and my siblings to our tita's house and he's alone at home. I wanted to go home and help him but couldn't. Unless I have a speedboat or something, of course (Hi Richard Guttierez!)
There was also a man stranded on top of a jeepney parked outside the Sports Center. People tried rescuing him but the ropes are not long enough to reach him. There was also a woman who almost drowned trying to brave the flood. Everything was depressing.
Around midnight rescue people with relief goods in a small bulldozer arrived. Too bad they hit a car that sunk under the flood near the Sports Center so they, too, were stranded. We could only watch as the rising flood water took boxes of cup noodles away with it.
I've been donating money to Red Cross since high school. I never thought I'd be the one needing rescue at that time.
We slept on the cold concrete floor while waiting for the flood water to come down. At around 6am, the flood was only ankle deep so we decided to get out of the Sports Center.
The place is depressing. There were cars everywhere, ruined by the flood, crying children at the sidewalk. It was like zombie apocalypse, only wetter.
There were no PUVs and a lot of people were waiting for rescue vehicles so we decided to walk home. I walked 10kms (possibly more) to San Mateo until I saw an empty jeepney pass by. Took the jeep and headed home.
The house was a mess but we had it so much better than those living in Marikina or Cainta. There were ruined furniture scattered in the garage but everything can be easily replaced. I took a bath and had the best tocino and tinapa I've ever tasted in my life. Took a short nap before helping around cleaning the house and the cars.
We slept early after dinner. And here I am, back at work like a good lemming! I would've stayed home but San Mateo is too depressing. Also, there's no power and no internet at home. And God knows, I miss the internet. And technology. And not smelling flood water anywhere.
