September in Review

School was the theme of September 2011.  With all four of us in University studies, we're a bit under it in our house at the minute!

School for Sophie - she left for Victoria on September 1st, and hasn't looked back.  All the social difficulties she was having last year have evaporated and she's in a residence full of like-minded individuals.  For the first time, she's having to balance her socializing with studying.  Sophie is also now the Secretary for the English Students' Society and a General Editor for their student Journal.  She's studying geeky English stuff, Latin and, greek & roman studies; paired with her social and extra-curricular activities, rounds out the perfect life for Sophie.  She's a busy, busy girl but happy happy happy.  It's wonderful for her.

School for Adam - he's in University... a year earlier than expected.  He is taking Phys Ed and is on the Golden Bears Soccer Team so he's busy busy.  He's taking Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry and one other course and so far, so good (first grades came in and he's holding his own!).  He's loving being in a huge school where he can be as anonymous or as social as he wants but overall, he's happy that he made the decision not to stay in high school another year  (I think it would have killed him) and he sees the potential of his life in front of him.  I'm just relieved to see the old Adam again;  he didn't really show up after the move from the UK until two months ago.  Phew.

School for Michael - he started his Executive MBA in August.  It's been an adjustment: mostly for the people administering the course because they don't seem to know what the hell they're doing.  But Michael's sticking with it, with the eye on the prize of those three letters after his name which will happen in about 19 months (but whose counting..).  With working full time and coaching Adam's youth soccer team, and finding time to go running &/or cycling, he's busy busy.  But 19 months....19 months...

School for Karen - yes, I finally am back in school to finish my degree that was started way back when.  The free-tuition benefit from my job paired with Sophie and Adam pretty much on their own was the incentive I needed to pull that particular trigger.  I'm taking a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport and Tourism, which pretty much is the formal degree program for all the volunteer work I've been doing all these years.  So far, so good but it's hard balancing courses along with working full time and trying to run our household (yes, eating is important but cleaning.... It might happen sometime?!!) and I'm taking Taekwon Do with my sister two evenings per week (yes, exercise is important!) and we've got a cat and a dog to care for.  I too, am busy busy!!!

So school is the theme, paired with busy busy.  I think though that we've all landed finally in a good place in Edmonton.  Our first year back was a bit of an adjustment but we're here, healthy, happy and moving forward with our lives.  We can't really ask for more (well, maybe some nice weather and a mild winter - would that be asking too much?).  Until next month...
