Glow-ing!

Last night was Meet-The-Teacher Night at Sophie's school.  I actually really like these nights because here, they set up the teachers in the main hall and you go from teacher to teacher and discuss progress, problems etc..

Sophie had glowing reports from all her teachers.  And then we got to her English teacher..  cool, enthusiastic young guy - Sophie likes him the best of all three of her English teachers.  We were last on his schedule, arrived 10 minutes early for our appointment and had a half hour conversation with him the results of which have left us all beaming since.

Sophie is a writer.  A. Very. Good. Writer.    Not only does she have an extraordinary talent for writing, but it is in her blood, as essential to her as breathing.  She cannot imagine life without being able to write; for her, it is not humanly possible.   She's had one or two teachers to date who have really appreciated and fostered her gift, particularly her fourth grade teacher who got her really started.  And now she has Mr. Robinson who, as we found out last night, is DYING to get a hold of more of her writing.  He's a real champion of her talent.

We have tentatively secured Sophie an internship with our local newspaper.  Michael coaches the son of the Marketing Manager who, in efforts to return the favour, has given Sophie a direct line to the Editor.  She has to get together an application which includes letters of reference and a portfolio.  When we asked Mr. Robinson if he could help with both, he got so excited, he could barely contain himself.  And the prospect of seeing some of Sophie's personal writing was almost too much.  His excitement was infectious.

I guess when you're a teacher, you spend so much of your time just trying to keep the focus of the students so when you have one who goes above and beyond and you're able to join them for at least part of the journey, it must be very rewarding.

I like hearing good things about my kids, but moreover, I like it when someone is willing to actually look and is able to see the best of what the kids have to offer, regardless of what that 'best ' is.   To me, that is the measure of a great teacher!
