FRIENDS ONLY

This journal is for fangirling about various things, and complaining about trying to figure out my life. Which is sometimes kind of amusing, I guess. If you want in on it, we can fangirl and complain together! Woo!

Edit: Small f-list cut as of 09/12 if you've been inactive for a while; drop me a message or comment if you'd like to be ( Read more... )

Hello! Seemed I couldn't send you a message back, haha. So, you asked what 'To boldly go' is in Swedish, well, it's 'Att djärvt färdas.' Roughly. At least according to the Swedish ST fan sites I browsed.

Glad to be of service, lol :D

AWESOME! Thank you so much. So like...without the "att" would it be a command? And would "gå" work instead of "färdas" since it's more general or...is "färdas" one of those weird verbs that doesn't get an r ending when it's in present tense? Like hoppas?

Ffff, I'm getting kind of ahead of myself. >_>;; Thank you so much though, I really appreciate this.

Hmm, lemme think... never tend to think about the grammar of my own language like this XD "Gå" wouldn't really work since it's used more as "to walk" then it does "to go" somewhere. I mean sure it means "to go" as well but in this context it doesn't really work. Well, in the sense that "Att djärvt gå" isn't as epic and most Swedes would take it as the person is walking, lol. "Färda" is more, well... I guess dramatic, haha.

The whole command thing... if you wanted to command someone to boldly go, haha, you would swap it around. "Färdas djärvt!" lol.

"Att färda" can be conjugated as "färdar" but not with this line, it'd just be wrong, "färdas" suits a lot better. You could say just "färda" too. Adding the S at the end... well. Yeah, like I said, haven't mused much about the grammar of Swedish. XD Not since I was a kid and had to in school, in any case :D

I know what you mean. I'm so bad at explaining English grammar and it doesn't help that we didn't get taught that well in school. ^^; I figured that about "gå" and I totally understand the epicness aspect of it too. "Boldly walking" is no fun. XD

That totally makes sense about "färdar" too, but what does that translate to? ^^;

I guess it could help if I explained the context of this whole question thing? I find out Friday whether or not I'm going to be studying in Uppsala alll of next year, and I've never been out of the country so I'm kinda excited and terrified at the same time. I wanted to get a teeeny tattoo of the words "boldly go" in Swedish as a personal reminder that I'm doing something new and different and I'm gonna go out there and...yeah! :D /cheesy

Färdas = travel. I checked a dictionary, apparently the S has to be there, it's the verb. Huh. Well, it's an old word so I wasn't 100% sure XD

Really? Wow! I hope you make it here, Uppsala is a lovely town. They got this massive church, it's stunning! I think you'll like it here :) But yeah if you're getting the tat then it should be 'Färdas djärvt.' I can always ask more Swedes but... yeah they're all young so. xD

Ooh! So it's one of those words that isn't really spoken anymore? And that's what they say in the show so it's all good? :D?

Thank you so much! I can't wait, I really hope I get to go. And I think I'm gonna cross-check it all over the place before I actually go get it done (not that I don't trust you! It's just that a tattoo is kind of a big deal XD). I really, really appreciate this. Thanks again!

Also, do you mind if I add you? You seem pretty awesome. :D

Yeah pretty much. I mean, it isn't really that ancient but if you used it in a typical conversation the Swedish person would react, haha.

Oh, I get it. I'd cross-check a million times before I got one! It stays on for life after all :D

I don't mind, I'll add you back! :D
