n73 on Orange

Question for you, i think im being a little paranoid, i have just aquired the sexual Nokia N73(music edition) and im a little worried that i always seem to be connected to my wap or 3g whatever its called nowadays.
now i phoned up orange and asked them - well i asked for the center number for the sms system and voiced my 3g concerns. Now, the guy told me its just telling me i have an active 3g signal, but my manual says that the icon underneath it says i have an active packet thing. Now that sounds like im connected. He told me to go into my settings and change the packet connection to "when needed" which i have done. But i cant afford to pay for wap on all the time. hence the paranoia
