Chapter 8
It was night. And it was dark. The very few streetlights present were all dead. Some of them were evidently hit by a bullet. Only the full moon was giving light in that forlorn area of the city. But it seemed enough light to the lone person walking among the many abandoned houses and structures. He barely even took notice of the different graffiti and vandalism that had peppered everything around him as he walked in a sure direction.
Suddenly, he halted in front of an equally rundown building in the corner of that area, keeping his hands inside his pockets. With his boots, he knocked at the door. It barely took ten seconds before the door opened slightly. The feeble light from inside shone on his face making his smile discernible.
“Long time no see, Hankyung-ah.” he greeted, looking up at the tall and handsome Chinese male who was staring at him with shock written all over his face.
“Leeteuk-sshi?” Hankyung said.
“Aish… I told you a long time ago to drop the ‘sshi’, didn’t I?” Leeteuk said, pouting. “We’re not exactly strangers to each other.”
Hankyung smiled a bit as if remembering something, and then he immediately contained it. “What are you doing here, hyung?”
“I have my reasons.” Leeteuk said coolly, pushing the door aside as he went in. Hankyung didn’t even try and stop him. Instead, he closed the door.
Leeteuk went straight to the living room where he saw other gang members. All of them looked at him suspiciously but none went near him, nor confronted him. He ignored them completely, as he scanned the room. His eyes stopped scanning when he noticed two faces from the corner of the room, isolated from the others. It was noticeable that they were Chinese but none of them resembled Hankyung so he guessed they weren’t related.
One of the two was a tall one, Leeteuk can’t help but notice how long his legs were. He had a pleasant face but he looked sharp. Kind of like the face of a man who wouldn’t hesitate to kill if necessary.
The other one looked younger. A lot younger. He had an innocent face, like a child. And he looked at Leeteuk curiously as opposed to the burning stares the rest of the gang were making on him. The kid clearly didn’t know him. A new recruit, then, Leeteuk thought.
“Well, well, well. Look who just walked inside my nest.” a voice from the second floor drew Leeteuk’s attention from the two Chinese males. The voice came from a viciously pretty male who was haughtily looking down at him. A smirk was plastered on his face. “Got into the wrong doorstep, Angel?”
Leeteuk smiled up at him. “Nope. I’m pretty sure I got into the right place, Flamebird.” he responded.
“Well then, the leader of the White Angel is a pretty busy man, I hear. I’m pretty sure you won’t just come here for a little chat.” the one upstairs said.
“Actually, that’s exactly what I came here for, Heechul-ah. Got some time?” Leeteuk asked.
Heechul looked at Leeteuk for a while. Then he jerked his head up. “Let’s go up.”
Heechul led the way upstairs, Leeteuk following him from behind. The members of the gang looked at them curiously as they ascended the stairs.
“Let me guess. I’m in trouble, aren’t I?” Heechul asked in an almost bored type of voice as soon as they reached the rooftop of the three-storey building he and his gang were residing in.
Leeteuk laughed softly. “Aren't you always?”
“Don’t get too cocky now. You’re not in your territory, as far as I can tell.” Heechul replied. While the tone was apparently normal, poison apparently dripped from his words. Leeteuk didn’t seem to be affected.
“It’s not a matter of territory, Heechul. You caused quite some harm on one of my own. Care to explain that?” Leeteuk asked. His tone turning serious.
“I would if you would care to tell me what I should explain about.” Heechul said, not even a little disturbed by Leeteuk's change in demeanor.
“Don't play games with me. You know that I'm not in a mood for them. Not now.” Leeteuk said, walking towards the edge of the structure, looking down at the dark road below them. "You've just went a little bit too far on your troubles to my group."
Heechul's eyebrows met. "What are you talking about?"
"Someone just attacked my hitman, Heechul." Leeteuk replied, looking meaningfully at the younger male.
"And what has that got to do with me? As far as I know, it was the Fang that attacked your Cho Kyuhyun, not me, and they're dead. Besides, doesn't he get attacked frequently for a lot of random reasons?" Heechul said firmly.
“That is true. But then the reason didn’t seem random to me. You see, the Fang members did say something funny before they died. It seems that they’re convinced that Kyuhyun had something to do with the annihilation of the Thunder.” Leeteuk responded.
“And? Again, what’s that got to do with me?” Heechul challenged.
“Well, it’s not everyday that one of mine gets attacked for something he didn’t do. Someone must’ve convinced them that he was responsible for it. And guess whose rumors convinced them of such a thing.” Leeteuk said, looking directly at Heechul. “Care to explain?”
Heechul glared at Leeteuk for a long time before he turned his back on him. He had his arms crossed, like a stubborn child. "Why the heck should I explain anything to you? You're just wasting your time."
Leeteuk glared at the back of Heechul's head for a moment then his face lightened up as if he just realized something. "Wait a minute. You didn't intend to get anyone hurt at all, did you?" Leeteuk said in a teasing voice.
Heechul immediately stiffened, but he didn't look back at the other man. "What the hell, Leeteuk! Of course I intended to do that! I've been trying to drag your group down to the mud for years! Of course that was all intentional!"
Leeteuk's smirk widened. "My, my, my, your defenses are up. And is that guilt I hear on your voice?"
Heechul's face flushed red. Leeteuk couldn't see it but he could just imagine what Heechul's face looks like now. "You're delusional." Heechul growled.
"We've been friends and rivals since childhood, Heechul. And we're practically fighting side by side in our days on the Wing Organization. I know you would brag about your successes aloud for a very long time. Especially when you get someone killed for it. But you just went defensive a little while ago. You weren't too cocky when I said you convinced the Fang of something." Leeteuk challenged. "Now let me tell you what I concluded, you made the rumor but you never thought about what would happen afterwards. And the fact that you didn't foresee the killing made you guilty. Now tell me, am I too delusional?"
If looks could kill, leeteuk would have been long dead already by the intensity of Heechul's glare. But, Leeteuk continued to smirk anyway. "Got you, didn't I?"
“Alright, alright. You want an explanation? Fine. My members and the other gangs were pestering me, okay? They wanted answers, which there’s no way I could provide. So I told them, ‘in my opinion, only that White Angel hitman Cho Kyuhyun had the skills for that kind of mess’. I said ‘opinion’ very clearly. I didn’t say he was the one. I didn’t spread the rumors. Or if I did, I certainly didn’t stage it so that your precious child could get hurt. What the hell would I get from that?” Heechul explained, or more likely, he ranted in a voice mixed with exasperation.
“Well then. Was that so hard to do?” Leeteuk asked, sighing deeply. He then patted Heechul’s shoulder. “Nothing like saying the truth to ease a guilty heart, right?”
“I hate you.” Heechul muttered.
“Please, tell me something I don’t know.” Leeteuk said, the smile almost permanent on his face. “Oh, look at the time. Time to cook dinner. Oh, and before I leave, let me tell you this, you had just escaped the kind of fate Kyuhyun was planning over you. To tell you the truth, I hate to be on your shoes right now.”
“And let me tell you this, you sure have a lot of nerve to come in here alone and unarmed.” Heechul said. “I could just set my boys on you on your way out.”
“We both know you wouldn’t do that, Heechul-ah.” Leeteuk said. “We all know you’re very capable of doing a lot of things. And you’re really more than willing to get a chance to just have my organization dragged along the mud. But still, devious as you are, you wouldn’t stoop low enough to kill an unarmed man.”
“And you’re so sure of that?” Heechul challenged, although he was certainly taken aback by Leeteuk’s words.
“Of course. We’ve known each other for far too long. The Heechul I knew back from our days as members of Wing Organization would never shoot a person from behind, far less if the person is unarmed.” Leeteuk said simply as he made his way to the door of the rooftop.
“Oh, I just noticed that you have two new members. Are you trying to widen your collection on Chinese men?” Leeteuk joked.
“Your eyes are just as sharp as ever. No, they’re not for collection. The tall one was Zhou Mi. But I prefer to call him ‘Seasonings’. It suits him quite well. The young one would be Henry.” Heechul said. Then, catching a glimpse from Leeteuk, he added, “And don’t even think about it. He’s my child. So don’t go running to him and get him to call you Umma. You have your children, I have mine. So get lost.”
“Aww…But he looks so adorable to be with you.” Leeteuk said, pouting.
“Forget it, Leeteuk.” Heechul said, smirking. The tension finally leaving him.
“Meanie.” Leeteuk replied. Opening the door.
“Hey, hold on a second.” Heechul called. Leeteuk stopped and stared at him curiously. “You know, you’re attitude today was a bit unsettling. Normally, you would confront me to the deepest depths of hell just because of the typical pranks I play on you and you’re organization. But now, you hardly even told me to fix the mess I just made. What gives?”
Leeteuk looked at him curiously, and then he thought for a while. “Hmm…I don’t know how to exactly place it for you, but let’s just say that you just did Kyuhyun a bit of a favor by causing that rumor.”
Heechul’s eyebrow raised. “Favor?”
“I’ll tell you what it is some other time. For now, I’m just gonna see how things are going to be for him from now on. If you ask me, I’m certainly hoping for the best.” Leeteik said, leaving Heechul very confused.
Around a couple of minutes after Leeteuk left, Siwon and Hankyung went up to the rooftop where Heechul was still standing. He was by the edge, watching the shadow of Leeteuk disappear from the streets.
“What was all that about?” Siwon asked.
“Unnecessary things.” Heechul answered, simply.
“He had just confronted you about the rumors, didn’t he?” Hankyung said, earning a deadly glare from Heechul. “Hey, it’s true.”
“You’re sleeping on the couch tonight.” Heechul said.
“What rumors?” Siwon asked. "Are you causing troubles again, hyung?"
Heechul sighed. This is gonna be a long night. Leeteuk sure gave him a bit of a problem. Not that he hadn’t started it, of course. But it was really unfair for Leeteuk to leave him here to explain everything again to a 'preacher'.
But then again. Leeteuk had just peaked up Heechul's interest.
So, I just did Kyuhyun a favor huh? And Leeteuk's hoping for the best? I wonder what's up. Whatever it is, I'll find out.
Heechul's lips curled up in an evil grin. This is gonna be interesting.
