Year 2010 Summa Summarum (but only things that matter of which sailing and gardening are not part of)
Strangest offer
A lady from a small town 200 km north of Helsinki called me and offered our kids a daycare place. As difficult as a nice daycare place is to come by, I had to decline based on a rather awkward commute and the fact that my kids are nearly teenagers. (Lesson: take care that the phone number you write in an application form is legible)
Toughest situation
A strict check-in lady in London nearly didn't let us leave the country because Katrina looks too much like Bramble. The lady was convinced that Bramble's passport was falsified as she couldn't possibly be twelve. (She isn't, the proof of which was clearly stated in Bramble's passport, which she missed as she thought Katrina's passport was Bramble's)
Oddest praise
I'm heading out for lunch opening the key card controlled door from inside. I walk out, a guy walks in. I turn around and tell him that since I don't know him I can't let him in and would he please leave? The guy mumbles something and goes out, me following making sure the door closes behind me. A few hours later our facility manager storms in my office, nearly hugs me and then continues to praise me for a good fifteen minutes. As it turns out, I had thrown out the landlord, a fact the landlord was highly impressed about ("The people in this office are well trained in security issues! Excellent work, Facility Manager!"). A month later I toss out a lady in a similar situation. The lady refuses to leave as she apparently "owns the building". It turns out that she actually DOES own the building :)
Numbers
- Took FOUR flights which is a major improvement to previous years with their average of FORTY flights.
- Didn't visit Stockholm one single time
- Read 83 books, which amounts to 16.000 pages. (Suddenly my absence from LJ has an explanation, eh? :D)
- Katrina has grown a mile, except her feet that haven't. Soon enough she'll start to topple over for lack of friction.
- Bramble hasn't grown any, except her feet that are now the size of kids' cross country skis.
Plans for 2011
- Keep my flight count as low as in 2010.
- Finally meet my team with which I've been working for almost two years.
- Read many, many good books (recs are always welcome)
- Try to find a bigger home for us.
- Do something about my work situation (I think this has been on my list for about six years now...)
