I'm not sure sugar that coarse is available in the US, but it's definitely worth looking for.
And that explains why I couldn't find a translation in any of my dictionaries for that word :) It's called "granule sugar" in Finnish and it's used for this purpose only. Ordinary caste sugar tastes the same of course, but it doesn't look as pretty.
I cut the slices with a very dull knife (in order not to cut through the baking mat..). The disfiguring that causes isn't that important since the rolls are going to get squashed with a knife anyways. I have to remember the dental floss trick though, that could come handy if I want to keep the slices in shape!
LOL! Bramble used cookie cutters and Katrina her imagination for the figures. The poor dough was mauled with vigor until the results satisfied the little bakers. Unfortunately the rising and baking change the shapes, so the it's a bit hard to tell that there's a horse, a funny star, a pulla boy, a heart and a star there :))
