The world isn't going to fix itself overnight, but this is a step in the right direction. Honestly, It's just a little bit annoying how much emphasis is being placed on the fact that he's "black", or "african american" now that he's been elected and that it's no longer a taboo subject. It's like the floodgates have been opened. The stories I've heard involving certain 'racially-charged' incidents have not helped either.
I'm more excited over the fact that Obama is racially mixed than anything. It touches on an annoyance that i've noticed and dealt over the years, that people are quick to lump mixed people into categories at their convenience. To filipinos, I tend to be considered "half-white". To whites, I'm usually considered "filipino or asian". Of course, if I became successful or famous somehow, I'm sure my "half-white" side wouldn't even be mentioned.
I just hope people don't miss the point. That it's not about what race has the most power, prestige, and status. That it's not about pointing out what makes us different. That it's about us banding together as fellow humans, celebrating our similarities and differences, and reaching a point where race is not as relevant or socially restricting as it is today. Where we seek not ways in which to categorize and seperate each other, but finding common ground.
To end on a more lighthearted note..
Peace.
