I find it somewhat amusing (and sad) that Batman immediately assumes that Dick only says he loves him as a placeholder/last choice. I don't think he realizes what an impact (to the good) his stable presence has had on Dick's otherwise turbulent life. (For one thing, Dick would never be tempted to enter a life of crime while Batman is his guardian angel!) I am quite sure he doesn't realize what his little speech about believing yourself has on Dick. (I picture it as similar to the importance of the Oath in the normal universe, in Dick's mind.)
Re: didn't make it up, whew!
When I came up with the concept, I started with the idea of Batman as like an imaginary friend, like in the Batman:TAS episode, "See No Evil". I think for Dick, this weird masked technically-a-criminal is a normal part of his life because Batman's been there ever since Dick can remember. I picture him smiling in secret delight whenever other people talk about Batman. As he gets older, though, he starts to realize how strange and surreal the situation is, until he begins to doubt himself.
Thanks so much for reading and for the lovely thoughtful comment! I appreciate it! :)
