It all works and I'm enjoying this story very much. Thanks.

I'm so glad that you liked that! That was the starting point to this whole story -- that central parallel in their lives.
I'm fascinated by how blase Buddy is in the movie about the 'scandal' on the Watch. The 'easy' answer, I suppose, is that he's bisexual himself. But whether he is or not, I like for him to be smart and thoughtful about it, with a touch of that above-it-all arrogance.
I think a lot, too, about how Carol probably never feels like she fits in on Wilby; that might be one reason we see her trying so hard. I think that Buddy, with his protective/justice-minded streak, might have been drawn to that at first. And in a similar way now, to Duck. (Not that that defines his relationships with them, but it could be the catalyst.)
Thank you so much for writing. :)

He's just not been able to see the world as it is, because everyone needs to lie to everyone else.
Zipping off to read later parts.

One of my favorite things about the movie is how everyone is wrapped up in his own life and problems (which is of course completely normal). Even at the end, with the climactic event of Dan's attempted suicide, there's never a moment when they all 'band together'; they still react in their individual ways in their individual homes. They just happen to overlap and bump into each other now and again.
I think someone like Duck probably realizes that everyone has secrets to keep (or he has come to realize that). Buddy, though, b/c he's maybe had a more sheltered life himself, or b/c he's more idealistic/optimistic, takes some reminding. I think they're good for each other that way. :)

When I first saw the movie, it seemed to me from their speech and body language that they weren't especially close. I was actually surprised when I watched the commentary with Dan McIvor and, in that scene, he refers to Buddy as Duck's 'old friend'. There are certainly different interpretations. That's what I think makes this film so great for fanfic; you don't get more than a glimpse of each of the characters, so you can write about them in many ways. ;)
Thanks for reading and letting me know!
