A Puzzlement

The book came.

The book, Richard III; the Last Plantagenet came today. And here I am thickly engrossed in the first of the massive volumes of the series Song of Ice and Fire, so which way do I go? True to form, I have read the final pages of the new book and am still shivering from the details of that last day of his life and the indignities after his death. I know, I know - it is a cardinal sin to read the ending of a book before you read the beginning but I do know the ending all too well and I always have to screw my courage to the sticking place to read it. Masochism, I suppose. After more than five hundred years, I still reach back across time and care.

The Martin books are richly textured and beautifully written, just the kind to hold me and they are all available for the Kindle which is a plus since all my currently available shelf space is reserved for Ricardiana. I may taste a little of each as I go as I am doing already with a number of books. Ah... this new one begins with Ludlow, a good place. I wonder how it handles the Brats in the Belfry.

There is a new non-fiction book I am considering ordering from England. I love getting books from there. One of the pleasures of buying books from a number of vendors is seeing how the various sellers package their wares. The nicest one I ever got came in one of those untearable plastic envelopes. Inside, the book was closely wrapped in brown paper which was tied with a string. An actual string. The archaism delighted me. Of my life is such small joys made.
