i'm already vegetarian, thanks to Colure's cooking showing me that hey, natural and healthy food CAN taste good, as well as her recipes. Vegan...I dunno.
I know the whole thing is avoiding all animal products, and I'm pretty much doing that already. I mean, I drink soy milk, um...I don't think I eat any other animal products. Maybe I am vegan? I mean, since my blood clot and subsequent flatline and then second blood clot and subsequent chest tube adventure/discovery of high cholesterol and having a hereditary fatty liver since my father is pacific islander...things have changed big time.
Tamara, my head doctor...well, I guess assistant doctor, but the one who saw me every day, and who is ridiculously hot, and who I have a MASSIVE <3 <3 <3 crush on, helped start me on the healthy world.
Then Colure helped me further by introducing me to the world of tasty health food, fake bacon, fake eggs, fake delicious chicken patties, mm, everything. i really, really like that food - and god, I've never felt so healthy in my life. Not to mention losing a shitload of weight and just feeling good.
I mean, is that considered vegan?
Can you fill me in on what exactly that is? I'm too lazy to Wikipedia it - plus, I figure you actually have an insight into the real culture, not just what data on a website says. I mean, I have a good idea and understanding, I just want to know if I could actually fit myself into that.
very simply, a vegan is a person who does not consume any animal products. at all. so, things like casein and whey you probably still do eat and dont know it. there are a million websites that can help you. and i promis they arent all peta! i actually first became interested in veg/vegan lifestyle at the skinny puppy concert back in 04. thats what made me think of it. i know they are big into AR stuff...and i think they are all vegan or at least veg. i am not sure though. oh, another important aspect of veganism more so than vegetarianism is that you do not use any animal products, not just consume. like, lanolin in lotions would be a no-go. honey is also a no-no for most vegans. they also do not wear fur, leather, silk, wool, etc. having products that are not tested on animals is obviously also a big part. how "serious" you are and how closely you research what you buy and read labels if up to you. ideally everyone would be a smart consumer and KNOW what they are buying, vegan or not...but that is not how it is. i am doing a slow transition to veganism right now. i still wear leather docs and wool sweaters, but the next sweater i buy will not be wool...a lot of people slowly transition like that. like, i have cosmetics from some of the worst companies when it comes to animal testing, but i am not going to buy that same toothpaste when i run out, for example. (i literally have 8 tubes to get through since mom works for said company...eeks) there is a lot to say here about MY personal views on veganism. i think you would really like the book Skinny Bitch. it IS written for the ladies, but i know you could appreciate it. very 'witty' and doesnt beat around the bush. i think it is especially pertinent for you since it is about the health aspects of veganism, not the (annoying) "oh, i dont animals becauase they are so fuzzy wuzzy cute!" personally, i went vegan for the health aspects and the environmental aspects. yes, animals are cute, and i know they feel pain/think/are very much aware...but i am still smarter than them. but that doesnt make it right. and they way animals are "harvested" now is utterly applaing to me. not just the way it is done in terms of offense to the animals and sanitary conditions-but i do not see a point in raising grain to feed an animal and then kill it. or filtering water to give cows and then spraying the water with pesticides to keep the barns fly-free. ugh, i could go on.... feel free to email me questions you have or any other advice/encouragment you might want. :) i can also recommend good LJ communities, local restaurants, places to shop (online and in philly), etcetc. i am more than happy to share the info!
as for the puppy tattoo...it is excellent! but personally, i am not going to get a symbol for anything ever again. ugh...still trying to think of a design to cover waht i have now. grrrr.
good luck and definitely email me! LE[insert my last name here]@gmail.com (all one word, no puncuation or anything)
