I opened up the time capsule and took a peek inside my 80s childhood...
Family
Those days, I lived with my god-parents on the weekdays and went back to my dad's on the weekend and my mom came visit me occasionally. My god-parents' family are very Chinese in their ways of thinking and doing things. On the other hand my dad has always been very westernized. So I had a fruit salad of East-West upbringing. My mom? My mom was either 'suddenly' very intimate or 'suddenly' very drunk. I treasured those better moments though.
VCR & TVB
VCR was all the rage in the 80s. I grew up in Gunung Rapat, Ipoh. It was a newly developed housing area back then. Not many families have VCR in their home in my neighborhood and my god-family happened to be one of the privileged ones that has it. So kids will come over to my house to watch cartoons on VCR, like the Hong Kong Cantonese dubbed Adieu Galaxy Express 999 (银河铁道 999), Voltron and Macross (超時空要塞).

Click to viewI grew up on a constant diet of 80s Hong Kong TVB series. To name a few of them: Shanghai Bung (上海灘), Yesterday's Glitters (京華春夢), The Brothers (親情), Police Cadet (新紮師兄), and my favorite of them all The Return of the Condor Heroes (神鵰俠侶). When I think about The Return of the Condor Heroes, somehow there is vivid memory of my god-brother no. 2 bought some fried rice take away for dinner, I remember eating the fried rice and thought it was the best fried rice I've ever tasted in my life. Great show with great food... that's why it made the memory so vivid. The villainess 滅絕師太 "Mother Annihilator", I really hated her guts. Kudos to the actress ability to inject such venomous heartlessness to the character. I would almost say Andy Lau and Ida Chan (陈玉莲) was the best screen couple at that time. But the screen couple that took the crown would be Chow Yuen Fatt and DoDo Chang in The Brothers. I don't really remember the plot, and all I can say is they looked really great together.
