Paper cranes

Before I begin today's tale, let me offer you a link to a quick read regarding Sadako Suzuki and 1000 paper cranes.

Most of us are at least passively aware of the tale, and even though I've been to both the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima and actually stumbled upon that very statue in the Wiki article, I did have some of the details of her story incorrect. I'm glad I re-read it.

Now, on to my point.

A good friend of mine has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Immediately I recalled Sadako's tale and during the set up to a yearly party that many of my local friends attend, I asked if anyone would be interested in learning to fold paper cranes which I would collect and send to her. As my friends are awesome and kind people, everyone in attendance happily participated.

The crane is a pretty basic folding pattern with a few quirks which can trip up beginners, and even though some of them turned out... special... we finished with 155 cranes of varying colors and sizes as well as one frog. I've got them here with me and I'll hold off a few days to collect some from others who weren't able to attend before I ship them to her.

My deepest thanks to everyone who participated in this, and let's keep her in our thoughts during her treatment.

japan, friends, japan!
